Martyrdom of Imam Ali Ibn Muhammad Al-Hadi’s (a.s)
شهادة الإمام علي بن محمد الهادي (ع)
Imam Ali al-Hadi (828 – 868 CE) was the tenth Imam of the Ahl al-Bayt and a descendant of the Holy Prophet Muhammad. Born in Medina, he was the son of Imam Muhammad al-Jawad and Samana. Known by the titles “al-Hadi” (the guide) and “al-Naqi” (the distinguished), he became Imam at a young age after his father’s death in 835.
الإمام علي الهادي (٨٢٨-٨٦٨ م) هو الإمام العاشر من أئمة أهل البيت وسليل النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وآله. ولد في المدينة المنورة، وكان ابن الإمام محمد الجواد وأمه سمانة. معروف بالألقاب الهادي والنقي، أصبح إماماً في سن صغيرة بعد شهادة والده في ٨٣٥
Imam al-Hadi’s Imamate lasted from 835 to 868, during which he resided in Samarra under the surveillance of the Abbasid caliphs. Despite the political pressures and harassment, he continued to guide the Shia community through a network of representatives known as the Wikala. His teachings focused on Islamic jurisprudence, theology, and ethics, and he is credited with numerous traditions on theology, sociology, and ethics.

Imam al-Hadi faced significant persecution from the Abbasid authorities, including house searches, imprisonment, and assassination attempts. He is believed to have been poisoned by the Abbasids in 868, at the age of around 401. His shrine is located in Samarra, and he is remembered for his piety, knowledge, and steadfastness in the face of adversity.

- Do not seek sincere amity from a man you have insincere sentiment for, nor honest advice from someone you direct your distrust towards, for another’s feelings [lit. heart] towards you are similar to your feelings towards him.
- لا تَطلب الصَّفا ممّن كَدّرتَ علَيهِ، ولا النُّصْحَ ممّن صَرَفْتَ سُوءَ ظنِّكَ إلَيهِ، فإنّما قلبُ غيرِكَ لكَ كقلبِكَ لَهُ
- Lack of sleep sweetens sleeping and hunger increases the tastiness of food.
- السَّهَرُ ألذُّ لِلمَنَامِ، والجُوعُ يَزِيدُ فِي طِيبِ الطَّعَامِ
- Miserliness is the most blameworthy vice.
- البُخلُ أذَمُّ الأخلاقِ
- The ignorant is a prisoner of his tongue.
- الجاهِلُ أسِيرُ لِسانِهِ
- Reproof [expressed] is better than resentment [harboured within].
- العِتابُ خَيرٌ مِن الحِقْدِ
- Wisdom does not avail an immoral character.
- الحِكمَةُ لا تَنْجَعُ في الطِّباعِ الفاسِدَةِ
- The one who is wary of Allah, Allah will make everyone wary of him.
- مَنِ اتّقى اللَّهَ يُتّقى
- Better than good is its doer, more beautiful than beautiful words is the one who says them and weightier than knowledge is the one who carries it.
- خَيرٌ مِن الخَيرِ فاعِلُهُ، وأجمَلُ مِن الجَميلِ قائلُهُ، وأرجَحُ مِن العِلمِ حامِلُهُ
- The thankful person prospers more as a result of his thanks than as a result of the bounty which incited the thanks, because bounties are sources of delight [in this world] whereas to thank brings bounties in this world and the hereafter.
- الشاكِرُ أسعَدُ بالشُّكرِ مِنهُ بِالنِّعمَةِ التي أوجَبَتِ الشُّكرَ ؛ لأنَّ النِّعَمَ مَتاعٌ، والشُّكرَ نِعَمٌ وعُقبى
- Dispute corrupts a long friendship and dissolves strong ties, the least of it is that one tries to overcome the other, and strife is the main cause of a break in friendship.
- المِراءُ يُفسِدُ الصَّداقَةَ القَديمَةَ، ويُحَلِّلُ العُقدَةَ الوَثِيقَةَ، وأقَلُّ ما فيهِ أن تَكونَ فيهِ المُغالَبَةُ، والمُغالَبَةُ اُسُّ أسبابِ القَطيعَةِ
