He was the son of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib and Fatimah bint Hizam, also known as Umm al-Banin. Al-Abbas is widely revered for his loyalty, bravery, and unwavering dedication to his half-brother, Imam Hussain ibn Ali.
Al-Abbas was raised in the household of Imam Ali, where he received extensive training in Islamic knowledge, ethics, and combat skills. His mother, Umm al-Banin, instilled in him a deep sense of loyalty and sacrifice for the family of the Holy Prophet. Al-Abbas was known for his towering stature, strength, and unparalleled courage, earning him the title of “Qamar Bani Hashim” (the Moon of the Hashim clan).
The most significant episode of Al-Abbas’s life occurred during the Battle of Karbala on 10th Muharram, 61 AH (October 10, 680 AD). He played a crucial role as the standard-bearer and commander of Imam Hussain’s army, displaying immense bravery and selflessness. Despite facing overwhelming odds, Al-Abbas repeatedly attempted to procure water for the thirsty children and women of Imam Hussain’s camp.
Tragically, Al-Abbas was martyred in his final attempt to fetch water from the Euphrates River. His arms were severed, and he fell to the ground, calling out to Imam Hussain. His martyrdom is deeply mourned by Shia Muslims, who regard him as a symbol of loyalty, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion.

Verily, there is such a high position to be conferred on him by Allah on the Resurrection Day, due to which all martyrs will wish to have the like of it.”

Imam al-Mahdi: “Peace be upon Abu’l-Fadhl al-Abbas the son of the leader of the faithful.
