Imam Ali ibn al-Hussain, also known as Imam Zayn al-Abidin or Imam Sajjad, was born on 5th Sha’ban, 38 AH (approximately January 8, 658 AD) in Medina. He was the fourth Shia Imam and the son of Imam Hussain ibn Ali and Shahrbanu, the daughter of Yazdegerd III, the last Sassanian emperor. Imam Zayn al-Abidin is highly revered for his piety, knowledge, and devotion to Islam.

 

Imam Zayn al-Abidin spent much of his life in Medina. Despite the tragic events of Karbala, where his father and many family members were martyred, Imam Zayn al-Abidin remained steadfast in his faith and continued to guide the Shia community.

 

He is best known for his supplications and prayers, which are compiled in the book “Sahifa Sajjadiya” or “The Psalms of Islam.” This book is considered one of the most important sources of Islamic spirituality and ethics. Imam Zayn al-Abidin’s prayers reflect his deep connection with God and his profound understanding of Islamic teachings.

 

Imam Zayn al-Abidin lived a life of humility and devotion, often fasting and praying for long hours. He was known for his compassion and generosity, always helping those in need. His leadership and wisdom earned him the title “Sajjad,” meaning “one who prostrates himself in prayer.”

Imam Zayn al-Abidin was martyred on 25th Rajab, 94 AH (approximately October 6, 713 AD) in Medina. He is buried in the Al-Baqi cemetery in Medina, and his shrine is a place of pilgrimage for Shia Muslims. His legacy continues to inspire and guide Shia Muslims around the world.

 

الإمام علي بن الحسين، المعروف أيضًا بإمام زين العابدين أو الإمام السجاد، وُلِد في 5 شعبان، 38 هـ في المدينة المنورة. وهو الإمام الرابع وابن الإمام الحسين بن علي وشهربانو، ابنة يزدجرد الثالث، آخر إمبراطور ساساني. وقد عرف بتقواه ومعرفته وتفانيه في الإسلام. وقضى الإمام زين العابدين معظم حياته في المدينة. على الرغم من الأحداث المأساوية في كربلاء، حيث استشهد والده وأفراد عائلته، ظل الإمام زين العابدين ثابتًا في إيمانه واستمر في توجيه المجتمع الشيعي

 

يشتهر الإمام زين العابدين بأدعيته وصلواته، التي جُمِعَت في كتاب “الصحيفة السجادية”. يعتبر هذا الكتاب واحدًا من أهم مصادر الروحانية والأخلاق الإسلامية. تعكس أدعية الإمام زين العابدين اتصاله العميق بالله وفهمه العميق للتعاليم الإسلامية

 

عاش الإمام زين العابدين حياة من التواضع والتفاني، وكان معروفًا بصيامه وصلواته الطويلة. كان معروفًا بتعاطفه وكرمه، ودائمًا ما كان يساعد المحتاجين. حصلت قيادته وحكمته على لقب “السجاد”

 

استشهد الإمام زين العابدين في 25 رجب، 94 هـ (حوالي 6 أكتوبر 713 م) في المدينة المنورة. وهو مدفون في مقبرة البقيع في المدينة، وضريحه هو مزار مهم للمسلمين الشيعة. يستمر إرثه في إلهام وإرشاد المسلمين الشيعة حول العالم

 

SELECTED SAYINGS OF IMAM AL-SAJJAD

مختارات من أقوال الإمام السجاد عليه السلام

 

  1. A true believer is he who is silent in order that he remains safe, and speaks only in order to get benefit.

(1) المؤمنُ يَصمُتُ لِيَسْلَمَ، ويَنْطِقُ لِيَغْنَمَ

 

  1. The signs of a believer are five: piety [even] when in seclusion, giving charity in spite of lack, patience in the face of calamity, clemency when angered, and truthfulness in spite of fear. 

(2) عَلاماتُ المؤمنِ خَمسٌ: الوَرعُ في الخَلوةِ، والصَّدقةُ في القِلّةِ، والصَّبرُ عند المصيبةِ، والحِلْمُ عند الغضبِ، والصِّدقُ عند الخوفِ

 

  1. Whoever charges others with what is in them provokes them to charge him with what is not in him.

(3) مَن رمى‏ النّاسَ بِما فيهِم رَمَوهُ بِما ليسَ فيهِ

 

  1. Sitting with the righteous brings about righteousness.

(4) مَجالِسُ الصّالِحينَ داعِيَةٌ إلى‏ الصَّلاحِ

  1. As for the right of your sitting companion – it is that you lower your wing to him [in humbleness], be fair to him in exchanging words, and do not get up from your seat without his permission, even though the one who sits with you has the right to leave your company without your permission. Forget his shortcomings and remember his virtues, and do not make him listen to anything other than good.

(5) أَمّا حقُّ جَليسِكَ: فأنْ تُلِينَ لَهُ جانِبَكَ، وتُنْصِفَهُ في مُجازاة اللّفظِ، ولا تَقومَ مِن مَجلِسِكَ إلّا بإذْنِهِ. ومَن يَجلِسُ إلَيكَ يَجوزُ لَهُ القِيامُ عَنكَ‏بغَيرِ إذْنِكَ، وتَنسى‏ زَلّاتِهِ، وتَحْفَظُخَيْراتِهِ، ولا تُسْمِعُهُ إلّا خَيراً

 

  1. Indeed Allah loves every sorrowful heart and loves every grateful servant.

(6) إنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ كُلَ‏قَلبٍ حَزينٍ، ويُحِبُّ كُلَّ عبدٍ شَكورٍ

 

  1. O son of Adam! You will continue to thrive as long as you are the admonisher of your self, and as long as accounting for yourself is one of your concerns.

(7) ابنَ آدمَ، إنّكَ لا تَزالُ بخَيرٍ ما كانَ لكَ واعِظٌ مِن نَفْسِكَ، وما كانَتِ المُحاسَبَةُ مِن هَمِّكَ

 

  1. I do like the man who finds his clemency in the midst of his anger.

(8) إنّهُ لَيُعْجِبُني الرّجُلُ أنْ يُدرِكَهُ حِلمُهُ عِندَ غَضَبِهِ

 

  1. My son, beware of taking a fool as a companion or mingling with him; keep away from him and do not converse with him for verily the fool is a lowly person whether he is absent or present. When he talks he exposes his foolishness and when he is silent he displays his inability to express himself. If he acts he spoils and when he is given responsibility he fails it. His own knowledge does not suffice him and others’ knowledge is of no benefit to him, he does not follow the one who advises him, his associates do not find rest [from him], his mother wishes to be bereaved of him, his wife wishes to lose him, his neighbour wishes to live far from him and the one who sits with him would rather be absent from his company. If he is the lowest [in status] in the gathering he abases those above him and if he is the highest of them he denigrates the others.

(9) إيّاكَ يا بُنيَّ أنْ تُصاحِبَ الأحمَقَ أو تُخالِطَهُ، واهْجُرْهُ ولا تُحادِثْهُ ؛ فإنّ الأحمَقَ هُجْنَةٌ غائباً كانَ أو حاضِراً، إنْ تَكَلَّم فضَحَهُ حُمقُهُ، وإنْ سَكَتَ قَصُرَ بهِ عِيُّهُ، وإنْ عَمِلَ أفسَدَ، وإنِ اسْتُرعِيَ أضاعَ. لا عِلمُهُ مِن نَفْسِهِ يُغْنيهِ، ولا عِلمُ غَيرهِ يَنْفَعُهُ، ولا يُطيعُ ناصِحَهُ، ولا يَستريحُ مقارِنُهُ، تَوَدُّ اُمُّهُ أنّها ثَكَلَتْهُ، وامْرَأتُهُ أنّها فَقَدتْهُ، وجارُهُ بُعدَ دارِهِ، وجَليسُهُ الوَحْدةَ مِن مُجالَسَتِهِ. إنْ كانَ أصْغَرَ مَن في المَجلِسِ أعْنى‏ مَن فَوقَهُ، وإنْ كانَ أكْبَرَهُم أفْسَدَ مَن دُونَهُ

 

  1. I saw goodness in its entirety was summed up in cutting off one’s greed for other people’s possessions.

(10) رأيتُ الخَيرَ كُلَّهَ قدِ اجْتَمَعَ في قَطْعِ الطَّمَعِ عَمّا في أيْدي النّاسِ
