Devotional acts of Rajab

In addition to the months of Shaʿban and Ramadan, the month of Rajab() enjoys a great honor, as cited in many narrations that have also conveyed the merits of this month. Furthermore, the Holy Prophet is reported as saying, “Verily, Rajab is the Great Month of Allah. No other month can be as sacred() and virtuous as this month. To fight against the polytheists during this month is forbidden. Most certainly, Rajab is the month of Allah, Shaʿban is my month, and Ramadan is the month of my people. Therefore, if one observes fasting on one day of this month, he will bindingly win the Grand Pleasure of Almighty Allah, will be taken away from His ire, and the gates of Hellfire will be closed in his face.”

Imam Musa ibn Jaʿfar al-Kazhim is also reported to have said, “If one observes fasting on one day in Rajab, Hellfire will go away from him a distance of one year walking. One who fasts three days will bindingly win Paradise.”

The Imam is also reported as saying, “Rajab is (the name of) a river in Paradise that is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. Hence, if one fasts even a single day in Rajab, Almighty Allah will allow him to drink from that river.”

Imam Jaʿfar al-Sadiq has reported the Holy Prophet as saying: Rajab is the month of imploring for forgiveness for my people; so, you should implore forgiveness repeatedly in this month much more than you do in other months, for Almighty Allah is forgiving and merciful. This month is described as the advantageous month, because mercy is poured on my people during it so heavily. You should thus repeat very much the following imploration prayer:

I implore for the forgiveness of Allah and I pray to Him for accepting of my repentance.

In a considerable form of narration, Ibn Babawayh quoted Salim as saying: I once visited Imam al-Sadiq in the last days of Rabaj. When his eyes turned towards me, he asked, “Have you fasted on any day in this month, Salim?”

“No, I have not,” answered I.

“You have missed great reward,” said the Imam. “Such a great reward that none can ever grant except Almighty Allah. Verily, this month has been given precedence to the other months by Almighty Allah Who has also given its sanctity a great consideration and will have certainly honored those who observe fasting during it.”

I asked, “O son of Allah’s Messenger, what if I fast on the rest days of Rajab, will I then be awarded anything of the rewards dedicated to those fasting in it?”

Imam al-Sadiq answered, “Listen, Salim! If one observes fasting on the last day of this month, this will secure him against the agonies of death, the horror of the resurrection, and the grave chastisement. As for one who observes fasting on the last two days of this month, this will give him permission to pass the Discriminating Bridge (sirat) peacefully. As for one who observes fasting on the last three days of the month, one shall be secured on the Grand Horror Day against all the horrors and hardships thereon and shall be also granted release from Hellfire.”

Finally, be it known to you that to observe fasting during the month of Rajab wholly brings about great favors. However, it has been narrated that one who is incapable of fasting during the month of Rajab may repeat the following supplicatory prayer instead one hundred times each day in Rajab:

Glory be to the All-majestic God. Glory be to Him other than Whom none should be glorified. Glory be to the All-honorable and All-dignified. Glory be to Him Who has dressed Himself with grandeur that fits none but Him.

The recommended devotional acts of Rajab are divided into two parts: general and particular. The general devotional acts in the month of Rajab are those advisedly said or done each day in the month without distinction. They are as follows:

First: It is advisable to say the following supplicatory prayer each day in Rajab. It has been narrated that Imam Zayn al-Abidin used to say this supplicatory prayer on the first day of Rajab while he was imprisoned:

O He who manages the wants of the needy, and is aware of that which is hidden in the heart of the silent sufferers! Every problem receives Your attention, and is settled well. O Allah, Your promises come true, Your favors are many, and Your Mercy is extensive, therefore, I beseech You to send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, and fulfill my desires in this world and in the world to come. Verily, You have power over all things.

Second: It is recommended to say the following supplicatory prayer that Imam Jaʿfar al-Sadiq used to say everyday in Rajab:

Those who come to anyone other than You have really gone wrong. Those who visit anyone other than You have missed the right way. Those who depend upon other than You have lost except those who depend upon You. Those who have had recourse to other than Your favors will have lived in poverty except those who have recourse to Your favors. Your door is always open before those who desire for You. Your wealth is always available for those who seek it. Your favors are always obtainable by those who ask for them. Your rewards are accessible for those who hope for them. Your sustenance is extended for even those who disobey You. Your forbearance is reachable for even those who antagonize You. Your habit is to do favor to the wrongdoers and Your custom is to overlook the transgressors. O Allah, (please do) lead me to the path of the well-guided ones, grant me the determination of the hardworking ones, do not include me with the unmindful ones who are dismissed (from Your mercy), and forgive me on the Judgment Day.

Third: In al-Misbah, Sheikh al-Tusi mentions that al-Muʿalla ibn Khunays reported Imam Jaʿfar al-Sadiq as saying: In Rajab, you may say the following supplicatory prayer:

O Allah, I implore You for the endurance of those who always thank You, the efforts of those who fear You, and the faith of those who worship You. O Allah, You are verily the Most High, the All-great, while I am Your servant—the miserable and the needy. You are the Self-Sufficient, the Praised, while I am the humble servant. O Allah, bless Muhammad and his Household and do favor to my neediness through Your self-sufficiency, to my impatience through Your forbearance, and to my weakness through Your power. O All-powerful, O Almighty. O Allah, bless Muhammad and his Household; the Successors (of prophet hood) and the Pleased; and save me from whatever aggrieves me among the worldly and religious affairs. O most Merciful of all those who show mercy!

The previously mentioned supplicatory prayer has been also mentioned by Sayyid Ibn Tawus al-Hassani in Iqbal al-Aʿmal. According to the narration, this supplicatory prayer is the most comprehensive and it is advisable to repeat it any time.

Fourth: Sheikh al-Tusi also mentioned that the following supplicatory prayer is advisedly repeated each day in Rajab:

O Allah, the Lord of the complete favors, the utter bounties, the immense mercy, the all-embracing power, the vast graces, the great bestowals, the nice gifts, and the abundant donations! O He Who is not resembled to anything, is not likened to any match, and is not overcome by any supported one! O He Who has created and then granted sustenance, has inspired to understand and then made speech, has made and then enacted laws, has risen high and then elevated, has estimated so perfectly, has shaped so excellently, has provided arguments so conclusively, has bestowed so completely, has granted so abundantly, and has conferred so favorably! O He Who has elevated so honorably that all sights have missed Him, and has approached so gently that He has passed all apprehensions! O He Who has possessed so incomparably that no peer can ever be found for Him in the domination of His power and has been so matchless in bounties and pride that nothing can oppose Him in the omnipotence of His situation! O He, the pride of Whose dignity has perplexed even the finest allusions and Whose greatness cannot be recognized by even the twinkling of the people’s sights! O He before Whose dignity all faces have humbled themselves, to Whose greatness all necks submitted, and Whom is feared by all hearts! I pray to You in the name of this piece of praise that none deserves save You, in the name of that which You have made incumbent upon Yourself for the believers who pray to You, and in the name of Your guaranteeing response for those who supplicate to You. O best hearer of all those who can hear! O best seer of all those who can see! O swiftest in calling to account! O Lord of Power, O Strong! (Please do) bless Muhammad, the seal of the Prophets, and his Household, and grant us a portion of the best of that which You decide in this month, choose for me the best act that You decide, seal my life with happiness with which You seal the lives of others, adorn my whole life with abundant wealth, grasp my soul with happiness and forgiveness of my sins, be my Redeemer as regards the Interrogation of the Grave, protect me against Munkar and Nakir, let my eyes see Mubashshir and Bashir, cause the end of my march to be towards Your pleasure and Paradises, decide for me delightful living and big kingdom, and bless Muhammad and his Household very much.

This supplicatory prayer is also advisably said in the Saʿsaʿah Mosque.

Fifth: Sheikh al-Tusi narrated that the following holy Signature() of Imam al-Mahdi was conveyed to the grand Sheikh Abu-Jaʿfar Muhammad ibn Uthman ibn Saeed: On each day in Rajab, you may say the following supplicatory prayer:

In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. O Allah, I implore You in the name of the meanings of all the names by which You are prayed by Your representatives, the trustees with Your secret, the conveyers of Your affairs, the describers of Your power, and the announcers of Your greatness. I implore You by Your will that has manifested itself through them and thus You have made them the essences of Your Words, the indications to Your Oneness, the signs leading to You, and Your Standings that are non-stop in each place where those who recognize You could only recognize You through them. No difference between You and them save that they are Your servants and creatures. The opening and the closing of all things are in Your hand alone. The inauguration and the conclusion of all things belong to You alone. (They are thus only) supporters, witnesses, wishing (Your mercy), protecting (Your religion), saving (Your laws), and pioneers (to the obedience to You). With them have You filled Your heavens and earth until it has become obvious that there is no god save You. I thus implore You in the name of all this, in the name of the sites of dignity in Your mercy, in the name of Your standings and Signs, to send blessings to Muhammad and his Household and increase my faith and firmness. O He Who is Immanent in His Evidence! O He Who is Evident in His Immanence and in His hiddenness! O He Who sets apart light from murk! O He Whom is described without recognition of his real essence! and He Whom is recognized without having anything like Him! O Edger of all edged things! O Witness of all done things! O Bringer into being all existent things! O Knower of the number of all countable things! O Knower of the place of all lost things! None is worshipped except You. You are the worthiest of all pride and magnanimity. O He about Whom, it is infeasible to as ‘how’ and it is infeasible to ask ‘where’! O He Who is concealed from all sights! O Everlasting, O Self-Subsistent, O Knower of all known things! (Please do) send blessings to Muhammad, his Household, Your selected servants, Your concealed human beings, Your favorite angels, and the Angels who draw themselves out in ranks and who throng (round the Divine Throne), and bless us in this month—the honored and dignified— as well as the next sacred months, pour upon us Your graces in this month, grant us abundant shares of blessings, admit our requests, in the name of Your Name, the Greatest, the Greatest, the Loftiest, the Most Honored that You put on daylight and it thus lit up and You put on night and it thus darkened, forgive us all that which You know about us and all that which we do not know, protect us against sins with the best of protection, save us against the acts that You predetermine, bestow upon us with Your superb looking, do not leave us in the hands of anyone other than You, do not prevent us from Your goodness, bless us during the age that You have decided for us, make righteous for us our inner selves, grant us Your security, make us enjoy perfect faith, and make us catch the month of fasting and the days and years coming after, O Lord of Majesty and Honor!

Sixth: Sheikh al-Tusi also narrated that a document signed by Imam al-Mahdi was received by Sheikh Abu’l-Qasim, Imam al-Mahdi’s representative, comprising that the following supplicatory prayer would be recommendably said in the month of Rajab:

O Allah, I beseech You in the name of those who were born in Rajab, Muhammad ibn Ali the second and his son Ali ibn Muhammad the divinely selected; I seek nearness to You through both of them for they are the best means of nearness to You. O He from Whom favors are sought and what He possesses is desired! I beseech You with the entreaty of him whom is enchained by his sins and is bound by his defects; therefore, he devoted himself to offenses, and disasters have attacked him heavily. He is now begging You for accepting his repentance, good return from You, redeeming from punishment, releasing from Hellfire, and overlooking the sins that are hanged to him. Certainly, You, O my Master, the greatest of all hopes and desires he has. O Allah, I beg You in the name of the holy means that You admit and all of the elevated courses that take to You to encompass me, in this month, with vast mercy of You, abundant favors, and satisfaction with what You have decided for me until I am put in my final hole, which is my abode to the Hereafter and the Final Fate.

Seventh: Sheikh al-Tusi reported the following words from Abu’l-Qasim ibn Ruh, the private representative of Imam al-Mahdi: In Rajab, you may visit any of the shrines (of the Holy Infallibles) that are possible for you to visit, and say therein:

All praise be to Allah Who has allowed us to visit the shrine of His Saints in Rajab and made obligatory upon us fulfilling our duties towards them. May Allah send blessings to Muhammad, the divinely selected, and upon his Successors—the doors to Him. O Allah, just as You have allowed us to visit their shrines, please do fulfill for us the promises You have made with them, include us with them, and include us with those whom shall not be prevented from drinking from the (Divine) Pool in the abode of eternity and perpetuity. Peace be upon you all. I have turned my face towards you and directed to you carrying my request and need with me, which is the release of my neck from Hellfire and the settlement with you in the Abode of Final Settlement with your pious adherents (Shia). Peace be upon you all for that you persevered in patience. Now how excellent is the final home! I hereby beg you and put my hope in you as regards the matters in which you have the right to act and recompense. Truly, through you only are the hopeless restored to good condition, the ailed healed, and that which the wombs absorb and that which they grow. Verily, I have full faith in your Secret and I am fully submissive to your words; I thus beg you in the name of Allah to make me return having my requests responded, met, accepted, given success, and settled, and set aright all my needs and all my affairs towards you. Peace be upon you from one who bids you farewell and puts all his needs with you, praying to Allah for another visit to you, since his hope is never cut off from you. I also pray Him to make my departure successful to a productive place, a fruitful area, comfort, and luxurious up to the befalling of death. I also pray Him for the best destiny and abode in the Eternal Bliss, the affluent living, the perpetual fruit, the drinking from the pure drink, and the divine spring whose drink is refreshing and thirst-quenching that is never bored or fed up. Allah’s mercy, blessings, and salutations be upon you incessantly until I return to your presence and win the honor of visiting you again and the honor of being resurrected with your group. Allah’s mercy, blessings, benedictions, and salutations be upon you, for Allah alone is Sufficient for us! Most Excellent is He in Whom we trust!

Eighth: Sayyid Ibn Tawus narrated that Muhammad ibn Dhakwan—known as al-Sajjad due to his remarkable, time-consuming prostration during which he used to weep so heavily that he lost his sight—asked Imam Jaʿfar al-Sadiq, saying, “May Allah accept me as sacrifice for you! We are now in Rajab; I therefore please you to teach me a supplicatory prayer due to which Almighty Allah may help me.” Hence, the Imam asked him to write down the following:

In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent the All-merciful. You may say the following (supplicatory prayer) each day in Rajab; in mornings, evenings, and after each of the obligatory prayers:

O He Whom alone I hope for all good things and Whose wrath I do not expect when I do wrong! O He Who recompenses the little deed with very much reward! O He Who answers one who begs Him! O He Who gives those who do not ask Him and do not even recognize Him out of His kindness and mercifulness! (Please do) give me, for I pray You, the whole welfare of this world and the whole welfare of the Next World and save me, for I pray You, the whole evil of this world and the Next World. Verily, all that which You give is unblemished. (Please do) increase Your favors upon me, O All-generous!

The narrator then added that Imam al-Sadiq then grasped his beard with his left hand, while saying this supplicatory prayer, and moved ceaselessly the forefinger of his right hand. He then added:

O Lord of Majesty and Honor! O Lord of bliss and magnanimity! O Lord of favor and munificence! (Please do) rescue my white-hair beard from Hellfire.

Ninth: The Holy Prophet is reported as saying: Whoever repeats the following imploration for forgiveness one hundred times in Rajab and immediately gives alms after it, Almighty Allah will conclude his life with mercy and forgiveness. Also, whoever repeats it four hundred times, will be given the reward of one hundred martyrs:

I implore the forgiveness of Allah. There is no god save Him, the One and Only Who has no partner, and I repent before Him.

Tenth: The Holy Prophet is also reported to have said: Whoever repeats this supplication one thousand times in Rajab, Almighty Allah will decide for him one hundred thousand rewards and award him one hundred houses in Paradise:

There is no god save Allah.

Eleventh: A narration reads that whoever repeats the following imploration for forgiveness seventy times in the morning and seventy times in the evening on each day in Rajab, will be admitted by Almighty Allah if he dies in Rajab and Hellfire will not touch him on account of the blessings of Rajab:

I implore the forgiveness of Allah and I repent to Him.

After this imploration is repeated seventy times, it is recommended to raise the hands towards the sky and say:

O Allah, (please do) forgive me and accept my repentance.

Twelfth: It is recommended to implore Almighty Allah for forgiveness in the following form one thousand times in Rajab so that He will forgive:

I implore Allah, the Lord of majesty and honor, to forgive my all sins and offenses.

Thirteenth: In Iqbal al-Aʿmal, Sayyid Ibn Tawus mentioned great rewards for those who repeat Surah al-Tawhid ten thousand, one thousand, or one hundred times in Rajab. Likewise, he has narrated that one who recites Surah al-Tawhid one hundred times on Fridays in Rajab will enjoy, on the Resurrection Day, light that draws him towards Paradise.

Fourteenth: Sayyid Ibn Tawus also narrated that one who fasts on a day in Rajab and offers a four-unit prayer in the first unit of which he repeats Ayah al-Kursi one hundred times and in the second, Surah al-Tawhid two hundred times, will not depart life before he sees (in sleep) his place in Paradise or someone else sees it on behalf of him.

Fifteenth: Sayyid Ibn Tawus also reported from the Holy Prophet that if one offer a four-unit prayer on Friday in Rajab between the obligatory Midday and Afternoon Prayers in each unit of which Surah al-Fatihah is recited once, Ayah al-Kursi repeated seven times, and Surah al-Tawhid five times; and then the following imploration for forgiveness repeated ten times—if one offers this prayer, Almighty Allah will decide for him since the day on which he offered this prayer and up to the day of his death one thousand rewards a day, a city built with ruby in Paradise for each verse (of the Holy Quran) he recites, a palace built with white pearls in Paradise for each letter he recites from the Holy Quran, Paradisiacal Women, ultimate pleasure, inclusion with the (true) worshippers, seal his life with happiness and forgiveness… etc. The supplicatory is as follows:

I implore for Allah’s forgiveness and I pray Him for accepting of my repentance.

Sixteenth: It is recommended to fast on three days in the month of Rajab: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. It has been narrated that whoever fasts on these three days in one of the Sacred Months will be awarded with the reward of nine hundred year worship.

Seventeenth: It is recommended to offer a sixty-unit prayer in Rajab. Each night, it is recommended to offer two units of this prayer in the first unit of which Surah al-Fatihah is recited once, Surah al-Kafirun repeated three times, and Surah al-Tawhid recited one time. After the accomplishment of the two prayer units, it is recommended to raise the hands towards the sky and say the following:

There is no god save Allah, the One and Only Who has no partner. To Him is the kingdom and to Him is all praise. He restores to live and cause to die and He is Ever-living and He never dies. In His Hands is all goodness, He has power over all things, and to Him is the return of all things. There is neither might nor strength save with Allah, the Most High, the All-great. O Allah, (please do) bless Muhammad, the Ummi Prophet, and his Household.

It is also recommended to pass one’s hand over the face while uttering the last statement. The Holy Prophet is reported to have said that if one offers this prayer and says this supplicatory prayer, Almighty Allah will respond to his needs and award him the reward of sixth times of Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages.

Eighteenth: It is also narrated that the Holy Prophet said: “One who recites Surah al-Tawhid one hundred times at one night in Rajab will be decided to have fasted for one hundred years for the sake of Almighty Allah Who will also decide for him one hundred palaces (in Paradise) in the vicinity of one of the Prophets.”

Nineteenth: The Holy Prophet is also reported as saying that Almighty Allah will forgive all the sins of those who offer a ten unit prayer, at one night in Rajab, reciting in each unit Surah al-Fatihah once and repeating Surah al-Tawhid three times.

Twentieth: In Zad al-Maʿad, Allamah al-Majlisi has mentioned that Imam Ali Amir al-Mu’minin reported the following from the Holy Prophet: If one repeats the following Quranic chapters, supplications, and supplicatory prayers three times each day and each night in the months of Rajab, Shaʿban, and Ramadan, he will have all his sins forgiven even if they are as many as and as much as raindrops, tree leaves, sea foam… etc: (1) Surah al-Fatihah, (2) Ayah al-Kursi, (3) Surah al-Kafirun, (4) Surah al-Tawhid, (5) Surah al-Falaq, (6) Surah al-Nas, (7) the following glorificatory prayer:

All glory be to Allah, all praise be to Allah, there is no god save Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and there is neither might nor power save with Allah, the All-high the All-great.

O Allah, send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad.

O Allah, (please do) forgive the believing men and women.

I implore for Allah’s forgiveness and I repent before Him.

Allamah al-Majlisi also mentioned that it is traditional to repeat the following supplication one thousand times each night in Rajab:

There is no god save Allah.

THE FIRST FRIDAY NIGHT IN RAJAB

The first Friday night in Rajab is called Laylat al-Ragha’ib (Night of Fulfillment of Desires). It is reported that the Holy Prophet used to practice a (recommendable) rite that brings about remarkable rewards at this night, which is a prayer with a special form.

As is mentioned by Sayyid Ibn Tawus in Iqbal al-Aʿmal and Allamah al-Majlisi in Ijazat Bani-Zuhrah, the rewards for one who offers this prayer are (1) a great number of his sins are forgiven, (2) on the first night in the grave, Almighty Allah sends him the reward of this prayer in the form of a life form with happy mien and fluency to say to him, “Good tidings, darling! You have escaped all hardships.” The offerer of this prayer will then ask, “Who are you? Indeed, I have never seen such s good-looking face, I have never heard such fluent words, and I have never smelled such nice scent.” He will be answered, “I am the reward of the prayer you offered at so-and-so night in so-and-so month in so-and-so year at the town of so-and-so. I am here now to give you your due, entertain you in your loneliness, and save you from this cheerless situation. When the Trumpet shall be blown (declaring the Resurrection Day), I will cast a shadow over your head in the Resurrection Court. So, be happy, for you shall never be deprived of goodness.”

The method of this prayer, however, is as follows: One should observe fasting on the first Thursday in Rajab. Between the Sunset and Evening Prayers, one should offer a twelve unit prayer each couple of which is separated by Taslim. In each unit, one should recite Surah al-Fatihah once, Surah al-Qadr three times, and Surah al-Tawhid twelve times. After accomplishing the prayer, one should repeat the following invocation of blessings seventy times:

O Allah, (please do) send blessings to Muhammad, the Ummi Prophet, and upon his Household.

Then, one should prostrate himself and repeat seventy times:

Glorified (is He), Holy (is He), the Lord of the angels and the Spirit.

Then, one should raise the head from prostration and repeat seventy times:

O my Lord, (please do) forgive (me), have mercy (upon me), and overlook (my wrongdoings) that You know. Surely, You are the Most High, the Greatest.

One should then prostrate himself again and repeat seventy times:

Glorified (is He), Holy (is He), the Lord of the angels and the Spirit.

Then, one may pray Almighty Allah for granting one’s needs, for they will be surely granted, God willing.

Finally, it is highly advisable to visit the Holy Shrine of Imam al-Ridha in Rajab, since it enjoys a special rank in this month. Similarly, to go on Umrah pilgrimage in Rajab also brings about a great reward. In this respect, it has been narrated that Umrah pilgrimage comes directly after the ritual Hajj pilgrimage in the amount of rewarding.

Imam Ali ibn al-Hussein Zayn al-Abidin is also reported to have gone on Umrah pilgrimage in Rabaj. In addition to offering prayers near the Holy Kaaba, the Imam used to prostrate himself before Almighty Allah too much, day and night, and used to say the following words while prostrating:

Grave has been the sin of Your servant; so, let forgiveness from You be nice.

THE FIRST NIGHT OF RAJAB

A number of rites are reported to be advisably said or done at the first night in Rajab, which is a holy night:

First: At the sight of the new moon, it is recommended to say:

O Allah, cause it (i.e. the moon) to appear carrying for us security, faith, safety, and Islam. Your and my Lord is Allah, the Glorified and Majestic.

It has been also reported that when his eyes fell on the new moon of Rajab, the Holy Prophet used to say the following:

O Allah, (please do) pour out Your blessings upon us in Rajab and Shaʿban. make us catch Ramadan, and help us observe fasting, do acts of worship, suppress our tongues (from saying anything improper), and cast down our eyes (against what is forbidden for us to look at). Do not make our share of Ramadan is only hunger and thirst.

Second: It is highly advisable to bathe oneself at the first night of Rajab. In this respect, some scholars have reported the Holy Prophet as saying, “Whoever receives the month of Rajab and bathes himself in the first, middle, and last of it, will be released from all of his sins to return as pure as the day of his birth.”

Third: It is recommended to visit Imam al-Hussein’s holy shrine.

Fourth: It is recommended to offer, after the obligatory Sunset Prayer, a twenty unit prayer and to recite in each unit Surah al-Fatihah once and Surah al-Tawhid once, and to separate between each couple of units with Taslim. Whoever offers this prayer, his family members, property, sons, and he will be kept saved from harm, rescued against the grave torture, and pass the Discriminating Bridge as swiftly as lightning without being called to account.

Fifth: After the Evening Prayer, it is recommended to offer a two unit prayer in the first unit of which Surah al-Fatihah should be recited once, Surah al-Inshirah (no. 94) recited once, and Surah al-Tawhid recited three times. In the second unit, Surah al-Fatihah, Surah al-Inshirah, Surah al-Tawhid, Surah al-Falaq, and Surah al-Nas should be recited once each. After Taslim, the following statement should be repeated thirty times:

There is no god save Allah.

Similarly, this imploration of blessings should be repeated thirty times:

O Allah, (please do) send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad.

The reward of this prayer is that whoever offers it, will have all his sins forgiven and will return as sin-free as the day of his birth.

Sixth: It is recommended to offer a thirty unit prayer in each unit Surah al-Fatihah is recited once, Surah al-Kafirun recited once, and Surah al-Tawhid repeated three times.

Seventh: Referring to the recommended rites at the first night of Rajab, Sheikh al-Tusi mentioned, in Misbah al-Mutahajjid, that Abu’l-Bukhtari Wahab ibn Wahab has narrated on the authority of Imam al-Sadiq on the authority of his father on the authority of his grandfather who said that Imam Ali used to devote himself to acts of worship in an exclusive way at four nights, (1) the first night of Rajab, (2) the middle night (i.e. fifteen) of Shaʿban, (3) the Eid al-Fitr Night (i.e. the first night of Shawwal), and (4) the Immolation Night (the tenth of Dhu’l-Hijjah). Imam al-Jawad is reported to have recommended saying the following supplicatory prayer at the first night of Rajab after the Evening Prayer:

O Allah, I beseech You in the name of Your being the King, having absolute power over all things, and whatever matter You want to happen shall happen. O Allah, I turn my face towards You asking You in the name of Your Prophet, Muhammad, the Prophet of mercy—may Allah’s blessings be upon him and his Household. O Muhammad! O Messenger of Allah! I seek Your intercession for me with Allah, your and my Lord, so that He may respond to my request. O Allah, I beseech You in the name of Your Prophet Muhammad and the Imams from his household, peace be upon him and them, to respond to my request.

You may then mention your requests.

Ali ibn Hadid has narrated that Imam Musa ibn Jaʿfar used to say the following supplicatory prayer while prostrating after the accomplishment of the Night Prayer:

[O Allah,] If I obey You, then thanks to You, and if I disobey You, then You have the right (to punish me). All favors that are done to me or to anyone else must come from You. O He Who existed before all things! O Author of all things! Verily, You have power over all things. O Allah, I seek Your protection against deviation at (the hour of) death, evil recourse in the grave, and regret on the Day of the approaching doom. I therefore beseech You to send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad and to make my life wholesome, my death sound, and my resort honorable; neither disgraceful nor scandalous. O Allah, (please do) send blessings to Muhammad and his Household; the Imams, the sources of wisdom, the causes of bliss, and the essences of immaculacy, and protect me, in their name, against all evils, do not seize me unexpectedly or inattentively, do not allow my end result to be regretful, and be pleased with me, for Your forgiveness is dedicated to the wrongdoers, and I am one of these wrongdoers. O Allah, (please do) forgive me (my faults) which do not harm You and give me from that which does not cause decrease to You. Verily, You are the One Whose mercy is all-embracing and Whose wisdom is all-excellent. (Please do) grant me opulence, comfort, security, health, wholesomeness, contentment, thanksgiving, good health, piety, patience, belief in You and Your Saints, affluence, and thanksgiving. (Please do) include, O my Lord, with this (request) my family members (or my wife), my sons, and my brethren-in-faith as well as all those whom I love and those who love me and my offspring and all my fathers and mothers among the Muslims and the believers, O Lord of the worlds!

Ibn Ashyam: It is advisable to say this supplicatory prayer after offering the eight-unit Night Prayer and before offering the three-unit Witr Prayer. Immediately after offering this prayer, it is recommended to say this supplicatory prayer while sitting:

All praise be to Allah Whose treasures are inexhaustible and those whom are secured by Him shall never fear anything. O my Lord, as I have committed acts of disobedience to You, this was only out of my full confidence in Your generosity. Verily, You accept the repentance of Your servants, pardon their wrongdoings, and forgive their flaws. You verily respond to one who prays You, and You are close to him. I am repenting before You from my sins and from You do I desire for a good portion of Your donations. O Creator of all beings! O my Redeemer from all hardships! O my Rescuer from all perils! (Please do) confer upon me with pleasure and save me from the evil end results of matters. Verily, You are Allah the thanked for Your bounties and affluent gifts and hoped for all good things.

It is worth mentioning that our scholars mentioned special prayers to be offered at each night in Rajab. Yet, it takes a long time to mentioned these prayers.

THE FIRST DAY OF RAJAB

First: It is advisable to observe fasting on this day. According to narrations, Prophet Noah embarked on the Ark on such a day; he therefore ordered his companions to observe fasting. Hence, whoever observes fasting on this day, Hellfire will move away from him for a distance of one year walking.

Second: Bathing oneself is also advisable on this day.

Third: It is also recommended to visit the tomb of Imam al-Hussein on this day. Sheikh al-Tusi narrated on the authority of Bashir al-Dahhan that Imam Jaʿfar al-Sadiq said, “Whoever visits (Imam) al-Hussein ibn Ali on the first day of Rajab, Almighty Allah will forgive him all his sins.”

Fourth: It is recommended to say the long supplicatory prayer, particularized for this day and mentioned in Iqbal al-Aʿmal.

Fifth: It is recommended to begin with offering the famous Prayer of Salman, which consists of thirty units.

On the first of Rajab, it is advisable to offer ten units of this prayer separating each couple with a Taslim. In each unit, one should recite Surah al-Fatihah one time, Surah al-Tawhid three times, and Surah al-Kafirun three times. After Taslim, it is recommended to raise the hands up and say:

There is no god save Allah, the One and Only Who has no partner. To him is the kingdom and to Him is all praise. He gives life and causes to die while He is Ever-living and never dies. In His hand is the good and He has power over all things.

The following supplication should be said thereafter:

O Allah, verily, none can ever divest him whom You decide to give, none can ever give him whom You decide to deprive, and nothing can ever stop that which You decide.

Then, one should pass the hands over the face.

Other ten units of this prayer should be offered on the fifteenth (i.e. middle) of Rajab in the very aforementioned form and supplications. However, the following supplication should be added after the first one:

The Lord Who is One, One and Only, Singular, and Besought by the all, has betaken neither a wife nor a son.

The last ten units of this prayer should be offered on the last day of Rajab in this very form; rather, the following supplication is added after the first one:

May Allah send blessings to Muhammad and upon his Household, the Immaculate. There is neither might nor power save with Allah, the Most High, the All-great.

Then, one should pass the hands over the face and submit his requests.

This greatly advantageous prayer must not be neglected. However, Salman has another prayer, to be offered on this day, which consists of ten units in each of which Surah al-Fatihah should be recited once and Surah al-Tawhid three times. This prayer brings about a great reward; it achieves forgiveness of all sins, protects against the grave torture and the chastisement on the Resurrection Day, and saves from leprosy, elephantiasis, and pleurisy.

Sayyid Ibn Tawus also mentioned, in Iqbal al-Aʿmal, another prayer that is offered on the first of Rajab.

According to some narrations, Imam Muhammad al-Baqir was born on the first of Rajab, AH 57. Yet, I believe that his birth was on the third of Safar.

THE THIRD OF RAJAB

According to some narrations, Imam Ali al-Hadi was born on the second of Rajab, AH 212. He departed life on the third of Rajab, AH 254, in Samarra.

THE TENTH OF RAJAB

On the word of Ibn Ayyash, Imam Muhammad al-Jawad was born on the tenth of Rajab.

THE THIRTEENTH NIGHT OF RAJAB

It is recommended to offer a certain prayer on each of the White Nights (i.e. the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth nights of each Arabic month) in Rajab, Shaʿban, and Ramadan. At the thirteenth night of Rajab, it is recommended to offer a prayer consisting of two units at each of which it is advisable to recite Surah al-Fatihah once, Surah Yasin, Surah al-Mulk (no. 67), and Surah al-Tawhid. A similar prayer, yet with four units and Taslim after each two units, should be offered at the fourteenth night. Also, a similar prayer, yet with six units and Taslim after each two units, should be offered at the fifteenth night. In this respect, Imam Jaʿfar al-Sadiq is reported as saying, “Whoever offers these prayers, will be awarded the merits of these three months (namely, Rajab, Shaʿban, and Ramadan) and will have all his sins forgiven, except polytheism.”

THE THIRTEENTH OF RAJAB

The thirteenth of Rajab is the first of the White Days on which it is recommended to observe fasting, according to narrations, so as to win an abundant reward. As for those who intend to recite the famous supplicatory prayer known as Dua Ummi-Dawud, they may begin with observing fasting on this day.

Famously, Imam Ali ibn Abi-Talib was born on the thirteenth of Rajab inside the Holy Kaaba thirty years before the Elephant Year.()

THE FIFTEENTH NIGHT OF RAJAB

According to narrations, there are many rites to be advisably performed at the fifteenth (i.e. middle) night of Rajab:

First: Bathing is an advisable act at this night.

Second: As said by Allamah al-Majlisi, It is recommended to spend this whole night with acts of worship.

Third: It is recommended to visit the holy shrine of Imam al-Hussein at this night.

Fourth: It is also recommended to offer the six-unit prayer previously mentioned within the rites of the thirteenth night.

Fifth: It is recommended to offer a prayer consisting of thirty units in each of which one should recite Surah al-Fatihah one time and Surah al-Tawhid ten times. Sayyid Ibn Tawus has reported this prayer from the Holy Prophet with an abundant reward.

Sixth: It is recommended to offer another prayer consisting of twelve units in each of which Surah al-Fatihah, Surah al-Tawhid, Surah al-Falaq, Surah al-Nas, Surah al-Qadr, and Ayah al-Kursi should be recited four times EACH. After accomplishing the prayer, one should repeat the following supplication four times:

Allah, Allah is my Lord. I do not associate anyone with Him and I do not betake any Master other than Him.

One may then submit his requests.

Sayyid Ibn Tawus narrated this prayer in this form from Imam Jaʿfar al-Sadiq although Sheikh al-Tusi, in Misbah al-Mutahajjid, mentioned that Dawud ibn Sarhan narrated that Imam Jaʿfar al-Sadiq said the following:

On the fifteenth night of Rajab, you may offer a twelve-unit prayer in each unit of which you may recite Surah al-Fatihah and any other Surah. When you finish, you may recite Surah al-Fatihah, Surah al-Falaq, Surah al-Nas, Surah al-Tawhid, and Ayah al-Kursi each four times. After that, you may repeat the following supplication four times:

All glory be to Allah, all praise be to Allah, there is no god save Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.

Then, you may say the following:

Allah, Allah is my Lord. I do not associate anyone with Him. Only shall that which Allah wills happen. There is no power save with Allah, the Most High, the All-great.

The same prayer may be offered at the twenty-seventh night of Rajab.

THE FIFTEENTH OF RAJAB

On this blessed day, the following rites may be advisably done:

First: It is recommended to bathe oneself on this day.

Second: It is also recommended to visit the holy shrine of Imam al-Hussein on this day. In this respect, it has been narrated that Abu-Basir asked Imam al-Ridha about the best times of visiting Imam al-Hussein’s tomb. The Imam answered, “These are the fifteenth of Rajab and the fifteenth of Shaʿban.”

Third: It is recommended to offer the famous prayer of Salman in the form which has been previously mentioned within the rites of the first day of Rajab.

Fourth: One may offer a four-unit prayer after the accomplishment of which, one may extend the hands and say the following supplicatory prayer:

O Allah, O He Who humiliates all the tyrants! O He Who dignifies the believers! Verily, You are my Shelter when all courses mislead me and You are the Maker of my creation out of Your having mercy upon me, while You have never needed to create me. Were it not for Your mercy, I would be of those who perish. You are my backer against my enemies, and were it not for Your support, I would be of those who are exposed. O He Who sends mercy from its origin! O He Who originates blessings from their centers! O He Who has given Himself exclusively disdain and elevation; therefore, His saints feel dignified out of His Honor! O He for Whom all kings have put the yoke of humiliation on their necks; they are therefore fearful of His supremacy! I pray You in the name of Your Entity from which You have derived Your Pride, I pray You in the name of Your Pride from which You have derived Your Dignity, I pray You in the name of Your Dignity by which You have been firmly established on the throne of authority; so, You have created all Your creatures who are, as a result, submissive to You. [I pray You to] send blessings to Muhammad and upon his Household.

According to a narration, any aggrieved person who says this supplicatory prayer will have his grief released by Almighty Allah.

DUA UMMI-DAWUD

Fifth: The most important rite on this day is to say the supplicatory prayer known as Dua Ummi-Dawud. This great supplicatory prayer brings about innumerable rewards some of which are that it grants the requests, relieves from anguishes, and saves from the persecutions of the wrongdoers. In the word of Sheikh al-Tusi, in Misbah al-Mutahajjid, one who intend to do this rite is required to observe fasting on the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth days of Rajab. At the midday of the fifteenth, one should bathe himself. After midday, one should offer the obligatory Midday and Afternoon Prayers so excellently that one should do all the parts perfectly. It is advisable to be in a vacant place so as not to be engaged with anything and not to be addressed by anyone. When the (obligatory) prayer is accomplished, one should face the kiblah direction and recite Surah al-Fatihah one hundred times, Surah al-Tawhid one hundred times, and Ayah al-Kursi ten times. Afterward, Surah al-Anʿam (no. 6), Surah al-Isra, Surah al-Kahf, Surah Luqman (no. 31), Surah Yasin, Surah al-Saffat, Surah al-Zukhruf (no. 43), Surah al-Shura (no. 42), Surah al-Dukhan (no. 44), Surah al-Fath, Surah al-Waqiʿah, Surah al-Mulk, Surah al-Qalam (no. 68), Surah al-Inshiqaq (no. 84) and all Quranic chapters following up to the end of the Holy Quran should be recited. After reciting all these Quranic chapters, one may, still facing the kiblah direction, say:

True are the words of Allah, the All-great. There is no god save Him, the Ever-living, the Eternal, The Lord of Majesty and Honor, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful, the Forbearing, the All-generous. There is nothing like Him, and He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing, the All-seeing, the All-aware. Allah bears witness that there is no god but He, and (so do) the angels and those possessed of knowledge, maintaining His creation with justice. There is no god but He, the Mighty, the Wise. His noble Messengers have conveyed the mission and I am of those who bear witness to that. O Allah, to You belongs praise, to You belongs glory, to You belongs might, to You belongs pride, to You belongs supreme power, to You belong bounties, to You belongs greatness, to You belongs mercy, to You belongs reverence, to You belongs sovereignty, to You belongs beauty, to You belongs benevolence, to You belongs glorification, to You belongs holiness, to You belongs the confession of Your being the One and Only God, to You belongs the confession of Your being the most Great Lord, to You belongs that which is seen, to You belongs that which is not seen, to You belongs that which is far above the high heavens, to You belongs that which is deep down under the abyss, to You belong the worlds below the heavens, to You belong the end and the beginning, and to You is all thanks, all praise, all gratitude, and all bliss as much as it pleases You. O Allah, (please do) send blessings to (Archangel) Gabriel, the trustee on Your revelations, the firm in conveying Your orders, the obeyed in Your heavens and the places where Your honoring lies, the bearer of Your Words, the supporter of Your Prophets, and the terminator of Your enemies. O Allah, (please do) send blessings to (Archangel) Michael, the angel of Your mercy, the one created for (showing) Your kindness, and the one seeking forgiveness and assisting the people of obedience to You. O Allah, (please do) send blessings to Seraph, the bearer of Your Throne, the one in charge of the Trumpet (that declares the Resurrection Day), the one waiting for Your order, and the one apprehensive and fearful of You. O Allah, (please do) send blessings to the pure angels who bear Your Throne, upon the scribes; the noble, the virtuous, and the immaculate, upon Your angels; the virtuous recorders (of the deeds), upon the angels of the gardens of Paradise, upon the keepers of Hellfire, and upon the Angel of Death and his assistants. O Lord of Majesty and Honor! O Allah, (please do) send blessings to our father Adam: the foremost of Your creation whom You honored by making Your angels prostrate themselves before him, and whom You allowed to dwell in Your Paradise. O Allah, (please do) send blessings to our mother Eve: the purified from filth, the cleaned from dirt, the favorite from among the humankind, and the allowed to visit the places of sanctity. O Allah, (please do) send blessings to Abel, Shayth, Idris, Noah, Hud, Salih, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, the Tribes, Lot, Shuʿayb, Job, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, Micah, al-Khidr, Dhu’l-Qarnayn (the two-horned), Jonah, Elias, Elisa, Dhu’l-Kifl, Saul, David, Solomon, Zachariah, Shayah, John, Turakh, Matthias, Jeremiah, Habakkuk, Daniel, Ezra, Jesus, Simon, Georges, the Apostles, the Followers, Khalid, Hanzhalah, and Luqman. O Allah, (please do) send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, have mercy upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, and send benedictions upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, just as You have sent blessings, had mercy, and sent benedictions upon Abraham and the Household of Abraham. You are verily worthy of all praise, full of all glory. O Allah, (please do) send blessings to the Successors, the happy, the witnesses, and the leaders to the true guidance. O Allah, (please do) send blessings to the Substitutes (whom shall be given the favor of participating in Imam al-Mahdi’s campaigns), the loftiest personalities, those observing fasting with devotion, those who ardently serve You, those whom You have chosen, the ascetic servants, and the people of painstaking and hardworking deeds. (Please do) give Muhammad and his Household exclusively the best of Your blessings and the most abundant of Your favors. (Please do) convey to his soul and body my greetings and compliments and give him more favors, honor, and esteem so that You will make him attain the most elevated ranks of the honored ones from amongst the Prophets, the Messengers, and the virtuous, favorable ones. O Allah, (please) send blessings to those whose names I have mentioned or I have not from amongst Your angels, Prophets, Messengers, and obedient servants. Convey my invocations of blessings to them and to their souls and make them my brethren in You and make them help me pray You. O Allah, I seek Your intercession for me to You, I seek Your honor in the name of Your honor, I seek Your magnanimity in the name of Your magnanimity, and I seek Your mercy in the name of Your mercy and in the name of the people of the obedience to You. O my God and my Master, (please do) send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, have mercy upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, and send benedictions upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad just as You have sent blessings and benedictions and had mercy upon Abraham and the household of Abraham. You are verily worthy of all praise and full of all glory. Have mercy upon my humiliation, neediness, poverty, loneliness, aloneness, humbleness before You, reliance upon You, and submission to You. I implore You with the imploring of the humble, the subservient, the fearful, the scared the afraid, the miserable, the modest, the insignificant, the hungry, the poor, the seeker of Your refuge, the seeker of Your protection, the confessing of his sins, the implorer for You to forgive his sin, and the humble to his Lord; I implore You with the imploration of one whom has been disappointed by those whom he trusts, rejected by his intimate ones, and whose catastrophe has been enormous. I implore You the imploration of one burning, sad, weak, mortified, depressed, wretched, and resorting to Your shelter. O Allah, I also beseech You in the name of Your being the King, whatever You will shall definitely take place, and You have power over all things. I beseech You in the name of the holiness of this sacred month, the Sacred House, the Sacred Town, the Rukn (i.e. the corner of the Holy Kaaba), the Maqam (i.e. the standing-place of Prophet Abraham), the great rituals, and in the name of Your Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his Household. O He Who gave Shayth to Adam, and gave Ishmael and Isaac to Abraham! O He Who returned Joseph to Jacob! O He Who relieved Job from his harm after long hardships! O He Who returned Moses to his mother! O He Who increased al-Khedir knowledge! O He Who gave Solomon to David, gave Jonah to Zachariah, and gave Jesus to Mary! O He Who safeguarded the daughter of Shuʿayb! O He Who cared for the son of the mother of Moses! I beseech You to send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, forgive my all sins, save me from Your chastisement, and confer upon me with Your pleasure and security and with Your favoring, forgiveness, and gardens of Your Paradise. I ask You to redeem me from all circles of misfortune that are drawn around those who intend harm to me and me, unlock for me all doors, make easy for me all hardships, alleviate for me all difficult matters, mute all those who speak ill of me, defend me against all oppressors, suppress all my enemies and envious ones, protect me against all unjust ones, and rescue me from all impediments that lie between my needs and me, try to take me away from acts of obedience to You, and try to frustrate me from serving You. O He Who has bridled all mutinous jinn, overcome all tyrannical devils, mortified the necks of the oppressors, and deterred all the ruling authorities from harming the enfeebled ones! I beseech You in the name of Your power over all things and Your alleviating whatever You will however You will, to grant my requests as You will.

Then, you may prostrate yourself and try to stick your cheeks to the ground, saying:

O Allah, I am prostrating myself before You and I have full faith in You; so, (please) have mercy upon my humility, neediness, efforts, meekness, paucity, and my want to You, O my Lord.

You should try to shed even a single drop of tear, for this is the signal of admission.

THE TWENTY-FIFTH OF RAJAB

On the twenty-fifth of Rajab, AH 183, Imam Musa ibn Jaʿfar departed life in Baghdad while he was fifty-five years old. On this day, the mourning and sadness of the Holy Prophet’s Household, as well as their adherents, are agitated.

THE TWENTY-SEVENTH NIGHT OF RAJAB

The twenty-seventh night of Rajab is the night on which Prophet Muhammad was given the mission of promulgating the religion. This highly blessed night is called laylat al-mabʿath, which stands for the beginning of the Holy Prophet’s Mission of promulgating the true religion of Almighty Allah. The recommended rites of this night are as follows:

First: Sheikh al-Tusi, in Misbah al-Mutahajjid, quoted Imam Muhammad al-Jawad as saying, “There is a night in Rajab, which carries for people fortune that is more preferable than whatever is subjected to sunlight. It is the twenty-seventh night of Rajab. The next morning was the beginning of the Holy Prophet’s prophethood. Verily, one who does acts of worship at this night will have the reward of one who has worshipped Almighty Allah for sixty years.”

When the Imam was asked about the rites to be done at this night, he answered, “After you offer the Evening Prayer and take a sleep, you will wake up at any hour before midnight. You may then offer a prayer of twelve units in each of which you may recite Surah al-Fatihah and any other lenient Surah from al-Mufassal, which begins with Surah Muhammad (no. 47) up to the end of the Holy Quran. You should separate each couple of units with Taslim. After accomplishing this prayer, you should recite Surah al-Fatihah, Surah al-Falaq, Surah al-Nas, Surah al-Tawhid, Surah al-Kafirun, Surah al-Qadr, and Ayah al-Kursi each seven times. After all this, you may say the following supplicatory prayer:

All praise be to Allah Who has not taken to Himself a son, Who has no partner in the Sovereignty nor has He any protecting friend through dependence. And magnify Him with all magnificence. O Allah, verily I beseech You in the name of the situations of Your Dignity on the pillars of Your Throne, in the name of Your utmost mercy in Your Book, in the name of Your Name—the Greatest, the Greatest, the Greatest, in the name of Your Mention—the Highest, the Highest, the Highest, and in the name of Your Words the perfect, to bless Muhammad and his Household and do to me that which befits You.

You may then submit your desires. It is also recommended to bathe oneself at this night.

It is worth reminding that a prayer that is advisably offered at this night has been mentioned with the rites of the fifteenth night of Rajab.

Second: The best act that is ever done at this night is to visit the holy tomb of Imam Ali ibn Abi-Talib.

Third: In al-Balad al-Amin, al-Kafʿami instructed: Say at the Divine Mission Night:

O Allah, I beseech You in the name of the Grandest Manifestation at this night in this glorified month and in the name of the honored Messenger to send blessings to Muhammad and his Household, and forgive us that which You know better than we do. O He Who knows while we do not! O Allah, (please do) bless us at this night, which You have exalted with the honor of the Divine Mission, You have esteemed with Your honoring, and You have raised to the Honorable Place. O Allah, we thus beseech You in the name of the honorable mission, the gentle master, and the chaste line to bless Muhammad and his Household and to decide our deeds at this night as well as all the other nights as acceptable, our sins as forgiven, our good efforts as praiseworthy, our evildoings as concealed, our hearts as pleased with decent wording, and our sustenance that You decide for us as copiously flowing with easiness. O Allah, verily You see [everything] but nothing can see You while You are in the Highest Prospect. And, verily, to You are the final return and goal, to You are causing to death and granting of life, and to You are the Last and the First [of all things]. O Allah, we surely seek Your protection against meeting of disgrace and shame and against committing that which You have ordered us not to do. O Allah, we surely pray You for Paradise, out of Your mercy, and we seek Your protection against Hellfire. So, (please do) save us from it, in the name of Your omnipotence. We also pray You for the Paradisiacal Women; so, please grant us them, in the name of Your might. (Please do) cause the most expansive of our sustenance to be given to us when we become old aged, and the best of our deeds to be at the time close to our death. (Please do) extend [our ages and make us spend them] in acts of obedience to You and in all that which draws us near to You, in all that which allow us to enjoy a good position with You, and in all that which make our lives acceptable by You. (Please do) improve our recognition of You under all circumstance and conditions, do not refer us to any of Your beings lest they shall always remind us of their favors to us, favor us by settling all our needs in this world as well as the Next World, and do the same thing to our forefathers, our descendants, and all our brethren-in-faith with regard to all that which we have besought You for ourselves. O most Merciful of all those who show mercy! O Allah, we beseech You by Your Grand Name and Your Eternal Kingdom to send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad and forgive our grave sins, for none can forgive the grave save the All-great. O Allah, this is Rajab, the honored month, which You have honored us through it, being the first of the Sacred Months, and You have selected us for this honor from amongst the other nations. So, all praise be to You, O Lord of Magnanimity and Generosity! I thus beseech You by Your Name, the grandest, the grandest, the grandest, the most majestic, the most honorable, that You have created so that it has settled under Your Shadow and it thus shall never transfer to anyone other than You, I beseech You to send blessings to Muhammad and his Household the immaculate, and include us, during this month, with those who practice acts of obedience to You and those who hope for Your admission. O Allah, (please do) lead us to the Right Path and choose for us the best resting-place with You, under a dense shade and abundant possession. Surely, You are Sufficient for us! Most Excellent are You and in You do we trust! O Allah, (please do) make us return (to You) with success and victory; neither accursed (by You) nor misleading (the Right Path), out of Your mercy, O most Merciful of all those who show mercy! O Allah, I earnestly beseech You, in the name of the matters that bring about Your forgiveness and the matters that incumbently achieve Your mercy, to grant me safety from all sins, gain of all decencies, attainment of Paradise, and redemption against Hellfire. O Allah, just in as the suppliants have besought You, I am beseeching You. Just as the implorers have begged You, I am begging You. Just as the requesters have asked You, I am asking You. O Allah, You are (my) trust and hope and You are the ultimate desire in my supplications. O Allah, send blessings to Muhammad and his Household and establish conviction in my hear, light in my sight, well-wishing in my chest, remembering You on my tongue day and night, and expansive sustenance that is neither failing nor banned. So, please provide me sustenance and bless that which You decide for me, make me self-sufficient, make me desire for none save You, out of Your mercy, O most Merciful of all those who show mercy!

You may then prostrate yourself and say:

All praise be to Allah Who has guided us to the recognition of Him, included us exclusively with the protection of Him, and granted us the obedience to Him. Thanks, thanks.

When you raise your head (i.e. finish the prostration), you may say:

O Allah, I am turning my face toward You asking for the settlement of my needs, I depend upon You in submitting my problem, and I submit to You in the name of my Imams and Masters. O Allah, benefit us by our love for them, make us follow their examples, grant us their companionship, and allow us to enter Paradise with their group, by Your mercy, O most Merciful of all those who show mercy!

Sayyid Ibn Tawus: This supplicatory prayer is said on the Divine Mission Day (i.e. the twenty-seventh of Rajab).

THE TWENTY-SEVENTH OF RAJAB; THE DIVINE MISSION DAY

This day is one of the great feast days. On this day, the Holy Prophet was appointed for conveying the Divine Mission when Archangel Gabriel first came to him with the Divine Revelation. Several rites are advisably practiced on this day. Some of them are as follows:

First: It is recommended to bathe oneself on this day.

Second: It is recommended to observe fasting. In fact, this day is one of the four days that are dedicated to fasting in the whole year. The reward of observing fasting on this day is equal to seventy year fasting.

Third: It is recommended to repeat very frequently the invocation of blessings upon Prophet Muhammad and his Household.

Fourth: It is recommended to visit the tombs of the Holy Prophet and Imam Ali.

Fifth: In Misbah al-Mutahajjid, Sheikh al-Tusi mentions that al-Rayyan ibn al-Salt is reported as saying that Imam Muhammad al-Jawad observed fasting on the fifteenth and the twenty-seventh of Rajab while he was in Baghdad. Following him, all of his followers observed fasting. He then ordered us to offer the prayer that consists of twelve units at each of which Surah al-Fatihah and another Surah should be recited. Upon the accomplishment of this prayer, it is recommended to recite Surah al-Fatihah, Surah al-Tawhid, Surah al-Falaq, and Surah al-Nas each for times. Then it is recommended to say the following supplication four times:

There is no god save Allah. Allah is the Most Great, all glory be to Allah, all praise be to Allah, and there is neither might nor power save with Allah, the Most High, the All-great.

Then, it is recommended to repeat four times:

Allah, Allah is my Lord. I associate none with Him.

Then, it is recommended to say four times, too:

I never associate anyone with my Lord.

Sixth: Sheikh al-Tusi also reported Abu’l-Qasim Hussein ibn Ruh as saying: On this day, you may offer a prayer consisting of twelve units at each of which you may recite Surah al-Fatihah and any other Quranic chapter. After each couple of units, you may say:

All praise is due to Allah, Who has not taken a son Who has not a partner in the kingdom, and Who has not a helper to save Him from disgrace; and proclaim His greatness with thorough proclamation. O my Supporter throughout my lifetime! O my Companion in hardships! O provider of me with all graces that I enjoy! O my Succor in my desires! O source of success of my needs! O my guardian while I am absent! O He Who is sufficient for me when I am alone! O my entertainment in my loneliness! You alone conceal my faults! So, all praise be to You. You alone overlook my slips. So, all praise be to You. You alone revive my deterioration. So, all praise be to You. (Please do) send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad and conceal my defects, secure my apprehensions, oversee my slips, pardon my offenses, overlook my evildoings, and include me with the people of Paradise; the promise of truth which they were promised.

When you accomplish the prayer, you should recite Surah al-Fatihah, Surah al-Tawhid, Surah al-Falaq, Surah al-Nas, Surah al-Kafirun, Surah al-Qadr, and Ayah al-Kursi seven times. You should then repeat the following seven times:

There is no god save Allah; Allah is the Most Great, glory be to Allah, and there is neither might nor power save with Allah.

You should then say seven times:

Allah, Allah is my Lord. I associate none with Him.

After that, you may submit your needs.

Seventh: As is mentioned in Iqbal al-Aʿmal and some manuscripts of Misbah al-Mutahajjid, it is recommended to say on this day:

(Please do) forgive me and overlook (my evildoings), O All-generous! O Allah, surely all requests have been rejected, all means and ways have been inaccessible, all hopes have been eradicated, all expectations have been cut off from everybody save You alone. There is no partner with You. O Allah, I find the ways to requesting from You wide open, the springs of hoping for You quenching, the doors of supplication unlocked before one who implores You, and Your aid available for those who seek it. I also know that You are in the position of response for one who beseeches You, in the position of relief for one who resorts to You, and hastening to Your magnanimity and reliance upon Your promise compensate from the stinginess of the misery ones and suffice from that which is grasped by the mean ones. [I know for sure] that You never screen Yourself against Your beings, but it is their evildoings that prevent them from journeying toward You. I have also known for sure that the best provisions of one who intends to travel to You is a true willpower by which one chooses You from amongst others. Hence, my heart has called at You with full willpower, and I pray You in the name of all supplications said by a hopeful and thus You have achieved his hope, said by a seeker of aid and thus You have admitted his request, said by an aggrieved, depressed one and thus You have relieved him, said by a guilty sinner and thus You have forgiven him, said by a healthy one and thus You have perfected Your favors on him, or said by a poor one and thus You have conferred upon him with Your wealth; so, these supplications occupy a considerable position with You and enjoy a standing with You, I pray You to send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad and grant all my requests for this world and the Next World. This is Rajab, the honored and dignified month, which You have honored us through it, being the first of the Sacred Months, and You have selected us for this honor among the other nations. O Lord of Magnanimity and Generosity! I thus beseech You by Your Name, the grandest, the grandest, the grandest, the most majestic, the most honorable, that You have created so that it has settled under Your Shadow and it thus shall never transfer to anyone other than You, to send blessings to Muhammad and his Household the immaculate and to include us, during this month, with those who practice acts of obedience to You and those who hope for Your admission. O Allah, (please do) lead us to the Right Path, choose for us the best resting-place with You, under a dense shade and abundant possession. Surely, You are Sufficient for us! Most Excellent are You, and in You do we trust! Peace be upon His servants, the chosen, and His blessings be upon them all. O Allah, (please do) bless us on this day that You have honored, covered with Your nobility, and implanted in the great and highest Dwelling. (Please do) send blessings to him whom You sent (as Your Messenger) to Your servants and whom You accommodated in the Noble Place. O Allah, send upon him blessing that is never-ending, being in the form of thanks to You and reward to us. And make easy for us all our affairs and make our end result, up to the last of our lives, pleasant after You accept our little deed and achieve for us all our hopes out of Your mercy. Verily, You have power over all things. May Allah bless and exalt Muhammad and his Household.

It is worth mentioning that this supplicatory prayer, which is one of the excellent supplications of Rajab, was said by Imam Musa ibn Jaʿfar al-Kazhim on the day when the ruling authorities took him to Baghdad. That was on the twenty-seventh of Rajab.

THE LAST DAY OF THE RAJAB

Narrations mentioned that it is recommended to bathe oneself on this day and to observe fasting on it, which achieves the forgiveness of all sins, both the past and the future. It is also recommended to offer the previously mentioned Prayer of Salman within the rites of the first of Rajab.
