The month of SHAWWAL

The first night of Shawwal is one of the blessed nights. Many narrations have referred to the great merits and rewards of those who spend this night, as a whole, with acts of worship. Moreover, some narrations have mentioned that this night is not less blessed than the Qadr Night. The devotional acts at this night are as follows:

First: It is recommended to bathe oneself at sunset.

Second: It is recommended to spend the whole night with offering prayers, supplicating, imploring for forgiveness, and staying at mosques.

Third: It is recommended to say the following glorificatory prayer after the obligatory Sunset Prayer, Evening Prayer, Dawn Prayer, and the Eid al-Fitr Prayer:

Allah is Great. Allah is Great. There is no god save Allah. And Allah is Great. Allah is Great. All praise be to Allah. All praise be to Allah for He has shown us the Right Path. All thanks be to Him for that which He has conferred upon us.

Fourth: After accomplishing the Sunset obligatory and supererogatory prayers, it is recommended to raise the hands towards the sky and say:

O Lord of favor and bounty! O Lord of magnanimity! O He Who has chosen Muhammad and granted him victory! (Please) send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad and forgive me all the sins that You have known (from me) and they are written with you in a manifest record.

Then, it is recommended to prostrate oneself and repeat one hundred times:

I turn repentant unto Allah.

Then, one may pray Almighty Allah for all needs required, for they shall be granted, by Almighty Allah’s permission.

According to the narration mentioned by Sheikh al-Tusi, it is recommended to prostrate oneself after the Sunset and Evening Prayers and then say:

O Lord of power! O Lord of bounty! O He Who has chosen Muhammad and granted him victory, (please do) bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad and forgive me every sin that I have committed and forgotten, but it is recorded with You in a Manifest Record.

Then, one may repeat one hundred times:

I turn repentant unto Allah.

Fifth: It is recommended to visit the holy tomb of Imam al-Hussein, for this act brings about a great reward.

Sixth: It is recommended to repeat the following supplicatory prayer ten times:

O He Who is ever-Favorer on the beings…

Seventh: It is recommended to offer the ten-unit prayer, which has been mentioned within the devotional acts of the last night of Ramadan.

Eighth: It is recommended to offer a two unit prayer reciting, in the first unit, Surah al-Fatihah once and repeating Surah al-Tawhid one thousand times and reciting, in the second unit, Surah al-Fatihah once and Surah al-Tawhid once only. After accomplishment, it is recommended to prostrate and say the following:

I turn repentant unto Allah.

After that, the following supplicatory prayer should be said:

O Lord of favoring and magnanimity! O Lord of favoring and bounty! O He Who has selected Muhammad, peace of Allah be upon him and his Household, (please do) send blessings to Muhammad and his Household.

Then, one may pray for the granting of one’s personal needs. It is reported that when Imam Ali used to offer this prayer, he would say, “I swear by Him Who grasps my soul, Almighty Allah shall definitely respond to whoever offers this prayer and then prays Him for granting his needs, and Almighty Allah shall forgive him even if his sins would be as much as the pebbles in deserts.”

According to another narration, Surah al-Tawhid is repeated one hundred times, not one thousand. Yet, this narration has mentioned that this prayer is offered after the Sunset obligatory and supererogatory prayers.

Having mentioned this prayer, Sheikh al-Tusi and Sayyid Ibn Tawus recorded that the following supplicatory prayer should be said after the prayer:

O Most Merciful of the Merciful! Only that which Allah wills takes place. There is no power except in Allah, the High, the Great.

One may then prostrate oneself and say:

O Allah! O Allah! O Allah! O Lord-Nourisher! O Lord-Nourisher! O Lord-Nourisher! O He Who sends down blessing! To You only are all desires turned. I beseech You in the name of every name treasured in Your invisible collection, and in the name of Your celebrated names, inscribed on the hangings of Your Throne, to send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, to accept my offerings made in the month of Ramadan, to record my name in the list of those who will journey to Your Sacred House, to overlook my grand sins, to demonstrate, O Lord, before me Your treasures, O All-beneficent!

Ninth: It is recommended to offer a prayer of fourteen units and to recite Surah al-Fatihah once, Ayah al-Kursi once, and Surah al-Tawhid three times at each unit. The reward of offering each unit of this prayer is as same as the reward of forty-year worship as well as the reward of each and every one who has observed fasting and offered prayers in this month.

Tenth: In Misbah al-Mutahajjid, Sheikh al-Tusi wrote: At the last hour of this night, you may bathe yourself and sit in your prayer-place until dawn.

RITES ON THE EID AL-FITR DAY

First: It is recommended to say the supplicatory prayer that has been mentioned within the acts of the Eid al-Fitr Night to be said after the obligatory prayers and that begins with (allahu akbar allahu akbar) after the Dawn Prayer and after the Eid al-Fitr Prayer.

Second: It is recommended to say, after the Dawn Prayer, the supplicatory prayer, which begins with the following statement:

O Allah, I have turned to You in the name of Muhammad, my leader…

This supplicatory prayer has been mentioned by Sayyid Ibn Tawus. However, Sheikh al-Tusi has mentioned that this prayer is said after the Eid al-Fitr Prayer.

Third: It is obligatory to defray the Zakat al-Fitrah() tax as a single saʿ (a measure) for each person before the time of the Eid al-Fitr Prayer with details shown in books of Muslim jurisprudence.

It is worth mentioning that the Zakat al-Fitrah tax is one of the confirmed obligations, since the acceptance of one’s fasting is dependent upon the defrayment of this alms. It is also security against death up to the next year.

In the following verses of the Holy Quran, Almighty Allah has mentioned Zakat before the prayers: “He indeed shall be successful who pays Zakat, magnifies the name of his Lord, and prays. [87:14-15]”

Fourth: It is recommended to bathe oneself on this day. It is more preferable to bathe oneself in a river, if possible. In the word of Sheikh al-Tusi, the time of bathing is the period between dawn and the Eid al-Fitr Prayer. According to a narration, when you want to bathe yourself (in a river), try to be under shadow or under a wall. When you intend to begin the bathing, you may say:

O Allah, believing in You, fully aware of Your Book, and following the traditions of Your Prophet Muhammad, Allah’s blessings be upon him and his Household, (I take bath).

You may then mention the Name of Almighty Allah() and bathe yourself. After accomplishment, you may say:

O Allah, (please) consider this to wipe out my sins and purify my faith. O Allah, (please) remove filth from me.

Fifth: It is recommended to put on the best clothes, apply perfumes, and offer the prayer in an open place, other than Holy Mecca.

Sixth: It is recommended to eat something, as a breaking of the fast, before the Eid al-Fitr Prayer. It is preferable to break the fast with some dates or a piece of candy. Sheikh al-Mufid mentioned that it is advisable to swallow a piece of the soil of Imam al-Hussein’s tomb, for it is remedy for all illnesses.

Seventh: It is recommended not to leave one’s house for joining the congregational Eid al-Fitr Prayer before sunrise. And it is recommended to say the supplicatory prayers that have been mentioned by Sayyid Ibn Tawus in Iqbal al-Aʿmal. Among these supplicatory prayers is the one that Abu-Hamzah al-Thumali has reported Imam Muhammad al-Baqir as saying:

Whey you ready yourself for joining the congregational Friday Prayers and the Eid Prayers, you may say:

O Allah, if one, on this day, prepares oneself, takes pains, gets ready, or prepares oneself to visit another one, hoping for his aid, gifts, benefits, and grants; for You alone, my Lord, is my readiness, preparations, taking pains, training, and inclination in the hope of gaining Your aid, gifts, grants, benefits, bounties, and donations. I find myself celebrating one of the feasts commemorated by the nation of Your Prophet, Muhammad, blessings of Allah be upon him and his Household. I have not come to You, today, carrying a righteous deeds that I may trust to present before You nor have I introduced a creature as my interceder before You; rather, I submissively draw near You confessing of my wrongdoings and my offenses to myself. So, O All-great, O All-great, O All-great, (please) forgive my grave wrongdoings, for, verily, no one can forgive serious transgressions save You. O He save Whom there is no god! O most Merciful of all the merciful!

THE EID PRAYER

Eighth: It is recommended, thereafter, to offer the Eid Prayer, which consists of two units. In the first unit, recite Surah al-Fatihah and Surah al-Aʿla (no. 87). After the recitation of these Quranic chapters, say the Takbir statement (i.e. allahu-akbar) five times and raise your hands for supplication after each Takbir, saying:

O Allah, You are the Lord of glory and greatness,  the Lord of magnanimity and omnipotence, the Lord of pardon and mercy, and the worthiest of being feared and the worthiest of forgiving; I beseech You in the name of this day, which You have decided to be feast for Muslims and to be safety and increasing honor for Muhammad—peace of Allah be upon him and his Household—  (I beseech You) to send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, include me with every item of goodness with which You have included Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, and save me from any item of evil from which You have saved Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, may Your blessings be upon him and upon them. O Allah, I pray You for the best of all that for which Your righteous servants have prayed You,  and seek Your protection against all that against which Your righteous servants have asked Your protection.

You may then say the Takbir statement for the sixth time, go to the genuflection posture, and prostrate yourself. When you stand up for the second unit, recite Surah al-Fatihah and Surah al-Shams (no. 91) and then say the Takbir statement four times only raising the hands for qunut after each statement. After that, say the fifth Takbir statement and continue the prayer. After accomplishment of the prayer, say the Tasbih al-Zahra glorificatory prayer. Narrations have mentioned many supplicatory prayers to be said after the Eid Prayer; rather, the best of them may be the forty-sixth supplication of al-Sahifah al-Kamilah al-Sajjadiyyah, which begins with the following statement:

O He who has mercy upon him toward whom the servants show no mercy…

It is also recommended to offer the Eid Prayer outdoors, directly on the ground without putting a carpet or any other thing under the feet, to return from a way other than the one taken in the coming, and to pray Almighty Allah for accepting the acts of one’s brethren-in-faith.

Ninth: It is recommended to visit the holy tomb of Imam al-Hussein.

Tenth: It is recommended to say the Dua al-Nudbah supplicatory prayer. Sayyid Ibn Tawus instructed: After saying the Dua al-Nudbah supplicatory prayer, prostrate yourself and say:

I seek refuge with You from fire whose heat is never extinguished, whose fresh flame never deteriorates, and whose thirsty is never quenched.

You may then put your right cheek on the ground and say:

O my God, (please) do not turn my face in Hellfire after I have prostrated myself and soiled my face before You; it is not a show of favor from me to You, but it is You Who have this favor on me.

You may then put your left cheek on the ground and say:

Have mercy on one who has transgressed and committed blunders, but is now showing humility and confessing.

You may then return to the (ordinary) prostration and say:

If I am the most miserable servant (of You), You are verily the best Lord. Grand is the sin of Your servant; so, let pardon of You be nice. O All-noble.

You may then repeat one hundred times:

(I plead for) pardon. (I plead for) pardon.

Sayyid Ibn Tawus: “Do not spend this day with entertainment and negligence while you do not know whether your deeds have been accepted or rejected. Rather, if you hope for acceptance of your deeds, you must show thanks; and if you anticipate rejection, you must be intensely sad.”

THE TWENTY-FIFTH OF SHAWWAL

According to some narrations, Imam Jaʿfar ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq departed life on the twenty-fifth of Shawwal, AH 148. However, other historians have decided that he departed life on the fifteenth of Rajab. The reason of his death was that he was offered poisoned grapes. It has been also narrated that at his last hours, he gathered all his relatives and said to them, “Our Intercession (shafaʿah) shall not be won by him who belittles his prayers and who does not care for them.”
