Sahih al-Tirmidhi, vol. 2, page 306, Section: Virtues of al-Hasan and Hussain:

Through his chain of authority, al-Tirmidhi reported Salma to have said: I visited Ummu-Salamah and found her weeping. “Why are you weeping?” I asked. She answered, “I saw Allah’s Apostle (s) in my dream while dust covered his head and beard. I asked, ‘What is the matter, O Allah’s Apostle?’ He answered, ‘I have witnessed the slaying of Hussain.’”

Comment: Within the biography of Lady Ummu-Salamah the Holy Prophet’s wife, al-Hakim cited the aforesaid narration in al-Mustadrak ‛ala al-Sahihayn (vol. 4, page 19).

Ibn Hajar, in Tahdhib al-Tahdhib (vol. 2, page 356), and Muhibb al-Din al-Tabari, in Dhakha’ir al-‛Uqba (page 148), also cited the same narration. The latter then commented, “In his book: al-Hisan, al-Baghawi quoted this narration.”

رؤيا أم سلمة عند قتل الحسين عليه السّلام

(صحيح الترمذي ج 2 ص 306) في مناقب الحسن والحسين عليهما السلام، روى بسنده عن سلمى قالت: دخلت على أم سلمة وهى تبكى، فقلت ما يبكيك؟ قالت: رأيت رسول اللَّه صلَّى اللَّه عليه (وآله) وسلم – تعنى في المنام – وعلى رأسه ولحيته التراب، فقلت: ما لك يا رسول اللَّه؟ قال

شهدت قتل الحسين آنفا (أقول) ورواه الحاكم أيضا في مستدرك الصحيحين (ج 4 ص 19) في ذكر أم المؤمنين أم سلمة، وذكره ابن حجر أيضا في تهذيب التهذيب (ج 2 ص 356) وذكره المحب الطبري أيضا في ذخائر العقبى (ص 148) وقال: خرجه البغوي في الحسان

The vision of Ibn ʽAbbas upon the martyrdom of Imam Hussain

Al-Mustadrak ‛ala al-Sahihayn, vol. 4, page 397, Book: Interpretation of Visions:

Through his chain of authority, al-Hakim reported ‛Ammar ibn ‛Ammar to have quoted Ibn ʽAbbas as saying: I was asleep at midday and I saw in dream the Prophet (s) disheveled, covered with dust, and holding with him a flask of blood. I asked, ‘O Allah’s Prophet! What is this?’ He answered, ‘This is the blood of Hussain and his companions. I have been collecting it since today.’”

When I dated the day I saw that vision, I found it one day after the slaying of Hussain.

This narration is authentic according to the criterion of authenticity of narration decided by Muslim.

Comment: In Musnad (vol. 1, page 242), Ahmad ibn Hanbal cited the same narration with slight difference in the form. He also cited it, through another chain of authority, on the same page.

Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, too, cited the same narration in Tarikh Baghdad (vol. 1, page 142) and so did Ibn al-Athir in Usd al-Ghabah (vol. 2, page 22), Ibn ‛Abd al-Barr in Al-Istiʽab (vol. 1, page 144, Biography of Hussain ibn ‛Ali ibn Abi-Talib), Ibn Hajar in al-Isabah (vol. 2, page 17), and many other master transmitters of Prophetic traditions.

It seems proper to mention the following narration that related the vision of al-Shi‛bi, since its purport is compatible with the topic of this section of the book:

رؤيا ابن عباس عند قتل الحسين عليه السّلام

(مستدرك الصحيحين ج 4 ص 397) في كتاب تعبير الرؤيا، روى بسنده عن عمار بن عمار عن ابن عباس قال: رأيت النبي صلَّى اللَّه عليه (وآله) وسلَّم فيما يرى النائم نصف النهار أشعث وأغبر معه قارورة فيها دم، فقلت

يا نبي اللَّه ما هذا؟ قال: هذا دم الحسين وأصحابه لم أزل التقطه منذ اليوم قال: فأحصى ذلك اليوم فوجدوه قتل قبل ذلك بيوم، قال: هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم (أقول) ورواه أحمد بن حنبل أيضا في مسنده (ج 1 ص 242) وقال: فحفظنا ذلك اليوم فوجدناه قتل ذلك اليوم، ورواه بطريق آخر أيضا باختلاف يسير، ورواه الخطيب البغدادي أيضا في تاريخه (ج 1 ص 142) وابن الأثير أيضا في أسد الغابة (ج 2 ص 22) وابن عبسبر أيضا في استيعابه (ج 1 ص 144) في ترجمة الحسين بن علي بن أبي طالب عليهما السلام، وابن حجر أيضا في إصابته (ج 2 ص 17) ورواه غير هؤلاء أيضا من أئمة الحديث

(ثم) إن في المقام رؤيا للشعبي لا بأس بذكرها في خاتمة هذا الباب

Majma‛ al-Zawa’id, vol. 9, page 195:

Al-Haythami wrote: Al-Shi‛bi is reported to have said: I saw in dream some men coming down from the heavens and holding in their hands daggers with which they were chasing the slayers of Hussain.

A few days after that vision, al-Mukhtar chased the slayers of Imam Hussain and killed them.

Al-Tabarani reported this narration through an acceptable chain of authority.

الهيتمي في مجمعه (ج 9 ص 195) قال: وعن الشعبي قال

رأيت في النوم كأن رجالا من السماء نزلوا معهم حراب يتتبعون قتلة الحسين عليه السّلام فما لبث أن نزل المختار فقتلهم، قال: رواه الطبراني وإسناده حسن

The Jinn wail and weep over Imam Hussain

Al-Isabah fi Tamyiz al-Sahabah, vol. 2, page 17:

Ibn Hajar al-‛Asqalani wrote: ‛Ammar is reported to have said that Ummu-Salamah heard the Jinn wail for Hussain ibn ‛Ali.

Comment: The same narration is also cited by Ibn Hajar in Tahdhib al-Tahdhib (vol. 2, page 355), al-Haythami in Majma‛ al-Zawa’id (vol. 9, page 199) where he commented, “Al-Tabarani quoted this narration, reporting it through transmitters of traditions accepted by the compilers of the Sahih books,” and Muhibb al-Din al-Tabari in Dhakha’ir al-‛Uqba (page 150) where he commented, “Ibn al-Dahhak quoted this narration.”

نوح الجن على الحسين عليه السّلام

(الإصابة لابن حجر ج 2 ص 17) قال: وعن عمار عن أم سلمة سمعت الجن تنوح على الحسين بن علي عليهما السلام (أقول) وذكره في تهذيب التهذيب أيضا (ج 2 ص 355) وذكره الهيتمي أيضا في مجمعه (ج 9 ص 199) وقال: رواه الطبراني ورجاله رجال الصحيح، وذكره المحب الطبري أيضا في ذخائره (ص 150) وقال: خرجه ابن الضحاك

Majma‛ al-Zawa’id, vol. 9, page 199:

Al-Haythami wrote: Maymunah is reported to have said: I heard the Jinn lamenting Hussain ibn ‛Ali.

Al-Tabarani quoted this narration, reporting it through transmitters of traditions accepted by the compilers of the Sahih books.

الهيثمي في مجمعه ج 9 ص 199) قال: وعن ميمونة قالت: سمعت الجن تنوح على الحسين بن علي عليهما السلام، قال: رواه الطبراني ورجاله رجال الصحيح

Majma‛ al-Zawa’id, vol. 9, page 199:

Al-Haythami then wrote: Ummu-Salamah is also reported to have said: “Since the passing away of the Prophet (s), I have not heard the Jinn wailing except tonight. This means nothing but that my son has departed this life,” she meant Hussain. She then asked her maid, “You may go out and ask about the matter.” The maid did and she was told that Hussain was martyred.

Ummu-Salamah heard a genie wailing with these words:

O my eye! Shed tears as much as you can!

For no one weeps for the martyrs as I do.

I weep for the group driven by death

To a tyrannical arrogant who held an undeserved rule.

Al-Tabarani cited this narration.

Comment: Muhibb al-Din al-Tabari cited the same narration in Dhakha’ir al-‛Uqba (page 150) but he omitted the words of the genie. He then commented, “In his book: al-Sirah, al-Mulla quoted this narration.”

الهيثمي في مجمعه أيضا ج 9 ص 199) قال: وعن أم سلمة قالت

ما سمعت نوح الجن منذ قبض النبي صلَّى اللَّه عليه (وآله) وسلم إلا الليلة وما أرى ابني إلا قبض – تعنى الحسين عليه السلام – فقالت لجاريتها: أخرجي إسألى فأخبرت إنه قد قتل وإذا جنية تنوح

ألا يا عين فاحتفلى بجهدي * ومن يبكى على الشهداء بعدى

على رهط تقودهم المنايا * إلى متجبر في ملك عبد

قال: رواه الطبراني (أقول) وذكره المحب الطبري أيضا في ذخائره (ص 150) ولم يذكر أبيات الجنية، وقال: خرجه الملا في سيرته

Majma‛ al-Zawa’id, vol. 9, page 199:

Al-Haythami also wrote: Ibn Abi-Janab al-Kalbi wrote: The grave-builders told me, saying: Shortly after the slaying of Hussain, we went to the graveyard at night and heard the Jinn wail for him, saying:

The Apostle used to pass his hand over Hussain’s forehead;

That is why his cheeks glow.

His parents are from the highest clan of Quraysh

And his grandfather is the best of all grandfathers.

Al-Tabarani cited this narration.

(الهيثمي في مجمعه أيضا ج 9 ص 199) قال: وعن أبي جناب الكلبي ال: حدثني الجصاصون قالوا: كنا إذا خرجنا إلى الجبانة بالليل عند مقتل الحسين عليه السّلام سمعنا الجن ينوحون عليه ويقولون

مسح الرسول جبينه * فله بريق في الخدود

أبواه من عليا قري * ش جده خير الجدود

قال: رواه الطبراني

Dhakha’ir al-‛Uqba, page 150:

Muhibb al-Din al-Tabari wrote: Ummu-Salamah is reported to have said: “When Hussain was martyred, the Jinn wailed for him and the sky rained blood on us.”

Ibn al-Sari quoted this narration.

(ذخائر العقبى ص 150) قال: عن أم سلمة قالت: لما قتل الحسين عليه السلام ناحت عليه الجن ومطرنا دما، قال: خرجه ابن السرى
