The Holy Prophet’s Precepts to Imam Ali (Part 2)
وَصَايا رَسُولِ اللهِ صلَّى اللهُ عليهِ وآلِه لِلإمامِ عليًّ أميرِ المؤمنينَ عليهِ السلامُ (ج2)
O Ali! These three acts always save you: To hold back your tongue, to weep for fear of the penalties for your sins, and to be always welcomed by your family members. | يا عَليُّ، ثَلاثٌ مُنْجِياتٌ: تَكُفُّ لِسَانكَ، وَتَبْكي عَلَى خَطِيئَتِكَ، وَيَسَعُكَ بَيْتُكَ. |
O Ali! These three qualities are the chiefs of all acts: To treat people fairly against your own self; to treat your brethren-in-faith completely equally, and to praise God under any condition. | يا عَليُّ، سَيِّدُ الأعْمَالِ ثَلاثُ خِصالٍ: إنْصَافُكَ النَّاسَ مِنْ نَفْسِكَ، وَمُساوَاةُ الأَخِ فِي اللهِ، وَذِكْرُ اللهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ |
O Ali! These three categories of people are God’s guests: A man who visits his brother-in-faith for God’s sake. This man is certainly God’s guest, and it is incumbent upon God to honor His guests and satisfy their needs. The second is a man who performs an obligatory prayer and sits remembering God Almighty until the time of the next obligatory prayer comes. He is surely God’s guest and it is incumbent upon God to honor His guest. The third are those who are performing the ritual Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. They are surely the delegations to God, and it is incumbent upon God to honor His delegations. | يا عَليُّ، ثَلاثَةٌ مِنْ حلَلِ الله:ِ رَجُلٌ زارَ أخاهُ المؤْمِنَ فِي اللهِ، فَهوَ زَوْرُ اللهِ، وحَقَّ عَلى اللهِ أنْ يُكْرِمَ زَوْرَهُ وَيُعْطِيَهُ ما سَأَلَ. وَرَجُلٌ صَلَّى ثُمَّ عَقَّبَ إلَى الصَّلاةِ الأُخْرَى، فَهُوَ ضَيْفُ اللهِ، وَحَقَّ عَلَى اللهِ أنْ يُكْرِمَ ضَيْفَهُ. والحَاجُّ وَالمعْتَمِرُ فَهُما وِفْدُ اللهِ، وَحَقَّ عَلى اللهِ أنْ يُكْرِمَ وِفْدَهُ. |
O Ali! These three kind acts are rewarded in this world and in the World Hereafter: Going on the ritual Hajj pilgrimage eradicates poverty. Giving alms wards off misfortunes. And associating with one’s relatives extends one’s lifetime. | يا عَليُّ، ثَلاثٌ ثَوابُهُنَّ فِي الدُّنْيا وَالآخِرَةِ: الحَجُّ يَنْفي الفَقْرَ، وَالصَّدَقَةُ تَدْفَعُ البَلِيَّةَ، وَصِلَةُ الرَّحِمِ تَزيدُ فِي العُمُرِ |
O Ali! The deeds of those who do not enjoy the following three qualities are nil: Piousness that impedes against committing acts of disobedience to God; knowledge that protects against the ignorance of the foolish ones; and rationality that helps associate with people courteously. | يا عَليُّ، ثَلاثٌ مَنْ لَـمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِ لَـمْ يَقُمْ لَهُ عَمَلٌ: وَرَعٌ يَحْجِزُهُ عَنْ مَعاصِي اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، وَعِلْمٌ يَرُدُّ بِهِ جَهْلَ السَّفِيهِ، وَعَقْلٌ يَدارِي بِهِ النَّاسَ. |
O Ali! These three men will be stood under the shade of the Divine Throne on the Day of Resurrection: One man is he who likes for his brothers-in-faith whatever he likes for himself; another man is he who suspends doing any act before he discovers whether his act would please or displease God; and the third is a man who does not find fault with his brother-in-faith before he himself gets rid of that fault. A man will find a new fault with himself whenever he gets rid of one. It is quite sufficient for one to busy himself reforming his own defects. | يا عَليُّ، ثَلاثَةٌ تَحْتَ ظِلِّ العَرْشِ يَوْمَ القِيامَةِ، رَجُلٌ أَحَبَّ لأَخِيهِ ما أَحَبَّ لِنَفْسِهِ، وَرَجُلٌ بَلَغَهُ أمْرٌ فَلَمْ يَتَقَدَّمْ فِيهِ وَلَـمْ يَتَأَخَّرْ حَتَّى يَعْلَمَ أنَّ ذلِكَ الأَمْرَ للهِ رِضًا أوْ سَخَطٌ، وَرَجُلٌ لَـمْ يَعِبْ أَخَاهُ بِعَيْبٍ حَتّى يُصْلِحَ ذلِكَ العَيْبَ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ، فَإنَّهُ كُلَّمَا أصْلَحَ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ عَيْبًا بَدا لَهُ مِنْها آخَرُ. وَكَفى بِالـمَرْءِ فِي نَفْسِهِ شُغُلًا |
O Ali! These three are within the doors to righteousness: Generosity, good wording, and tolerance against harms. | يا عَليُّ، ثَلاثٌ مِنْ أبْوابِ البِرِّ: سَخاءُ النَّفْسِ، وَطِيبُ الكَلامِ، وَالصَّبْرُ عَلى الأذَى |
