NOVEMBER 15 – LADY FATIMA’S MARTYRDOM (according to a narration)

Lady Fatima al-Zahra, the veracious and infallible, was born in 615 CE in Mecca. Her father is the chief and seal of all of God’s prophets and messengers, the Holy Prophet Muhammad, God’s peace and blessings be upon him and his Family. And her mother is the magnificent Lady Khadija, the true mother of believers.

Lady Fatima al-Zahra occupies the highest position of reverence, for she is  one of the Infallible Fourteen. Furthermore, she is truly the mother of the Infallible Imams and she represents God’s authority over them.

Lady Fatima married Imam Ali and they had four children: Imam al-Hasan, Imam al-Hussein, Lady Zaynab, and Lady Ummu-Kulthum.

Lady Fatima al-Zahra is known for her unmatched piety, wisdom, and devotion to her family and faith. She played a significant role in supporting her father during his prophethood and stood by her husband, Imam Ali, during the early struggles of the Muslim community.

After the Prophet’s passing away, Lady Fatima defended Imam Ali’s right to leadership and she opposed the decisions made at Saqifa, which led to her delivering the famous sermon of Fadak.

Lady Fatima was martyred due to injuries sustained during an attack on her house by supporters of the first caliph, Abu Bakr. This event is deeply mourned incessantly, and Lady Fatima’s grave remains hidden, as per her wishes. Her legacy continues to inspire her devotees, who honor her as a symbol of infallibility, resistance, purity, and unwavering faith.

LADY FATIMA IN TRADITIONS

  1. The Holy Prophet: My daughter was named Fatima because God has decided to save her and those who love her from Hellfire.
  3. Ammara narrated: I asked Imam al-Sadiq as to why Fatima has been named al-Zahra [The Luminous Lady], to which he replied, “This is because when she stood for prayers in her prayer niche, her light would radiate for the dwellers of the skies jut as the light of the stars radiates for the dwellers of the earth.”
  5. Imam al-Sadiq: Fatima, God’s peace be upon her, has nine names before God Almighty. They are: Fatima, al-Siddiqa (the veracious one), al-Mubaraka (the blessed), al-Tahira (the immaculate), al-Zakiyya (the pure), al-Radiyya (the content), al-Mardiyya (the well-pleased), al-Muhadditha (the one spoken by the angels) and al-Zahra’ (the luminous lady).
  7. The Holy Prophet: Fatima is a part of me. Whoever pleases her pleases me, and whoever grieves her grieves me. Fatima is the dearest of all people to me.
  9. The Holy Prophet: Verily, Fatima is a part of me, and is the delight of my eyes and the fruit of my heart. Whatever grieves her grieves me, whatever pleases her pleases me, and indeed she will be the first to join me [after my death] from my household.
  11. The Holy Prophet: My daughter Fatima is the chief [Lady] of all the women of the worlds.
  13. The Holy Prophet: Have these glad tidings, O Fatima. Verily, Mahdi will be from you [i.e. your descent].
  15. The Holy Prophet said to Lady Fatima: Verily, God is angry at whatever angers you, and is pleased with whatever pleases you.
  17. Imam Ali, upon burying Lady Fatima, said: O Prophet of God! Peace be upon you from me and from your daughter, who is joining you and who has hastened to meet you. O Prophet of God! My patience with [the demise of] your chosen one [your daughter] has been exhausted, and my power of endurance has weakened, except that I have ground for consolation in having endured the great hardship and heart-rending event of your separation. I laid you down in your grave when your last breath had passed [when your head was] between my neck and chest.

“…Indeed we belong to God, and to Him do we intend return.” Now, the trust has been returned and what had been given has been taken back. As to my grief, it knows no bounds, and as to my nights, they will remain sleepless till God chooses for me the house in which you are now residing. Certainly, your daughter would apprise you of the gathering of your community in oppressing her. You ask her in detail and get all the news about the situation. This happened when a long time had not even elapsed [since your demise] and your remembrance had not yet ceased. My salutation be on you both, the salutation of one grief-stricken, not a disgusted or hateful person; for if I go away it is not because I am weary [of you], and if I stay it is not due to lack of belief in what God has promised those who bear misfortunes tolerantly.

  2. Imam al-Sadiq: God’s Messenger—God’s peace and blessings be upon him and his family—said: “Between my grave and my pulpit lies a garden from among the gardens of Paradise, and my pulpit rests on one of the waterways of Paradise.” This is because the grave of Lady Fatima is between his grave and his pulpit, and her grave is a garden from among the gardens of Paradise, watered by one of the waterways of Paradise.
